Is there a way of automatically renaming the current playlist item so when you pull up the subtitle search it doesn't search for 41690feb9c.480.mp4 but for *movietitle*.mp4?
Of course i would provide the title myself. Just to clarify: I'm streaming a vkontakte video which is passed to xbmc through json-rpc. thanks in advance!

Probably best to ask this in a general forum (or perhaps the forum for the subtitle addon you are using) where the right people are more likely to see it.
(It's not a Pi specific issue).
