Full Version: Is aspect ratio correct?

I currently have installed XBMC 13.2 on Android.

I have a video file that is 16:9 aspect ratio 1280x720 resolution, which I am trying to watch on my full hd lcd (1920x1080). If I leave the pixel aspect ratio to 1:1 and zoom it , it is left with black bars. I cannot understand this, is it XBMC bug? Since 1280x720 is the same ratio as 1920x1080 it should fill the whole screen. In fact to further prove my point, when I play the same video file in MX player it fills up the whole screen.

I am raising this issue because it would someday be ideal to have a media player that plays everything correctly and the aspect ratio is an important thing Smile
It all depends on the actual movie aspect ratio. Screenshot?
XBMC will upscale media to the resolution defined in System --> System --> Video output.

Leave the pixel ration alone and set the view mode to "normal"

If this doesn't help then check your TV settings and set the picture mode to "just scan, HD mode, 1:1" or similar.

And as hitcher says, a screenshot may help. Make sure to have the codec overlay showing by pressing "o" on the keyboard while playing a file.
I already stated that the resolution is 1280x720 (16:9) so I do not understand the reason of the screenshot but here it is

I have it set to normal, however the aim of the thread is.... why black bars? The screenshot I am sending you is infact on 16:10 monitor, and that explains black bars. But my tv is 16:9 so there should not be black bars.
A screenshot from a 16:10 monitor is just useless. So I would provide the screenshot from a 16:9 screen.

Could also be that the (maybe) wrong aspect ratio comes from crappy converting. Did you convert for yourself or did you download the file?

Maybe a Debug Log would help, too as we get some file info

Greetings
Unfortunately I cannot provide a screenshot from the 16:9 screen as it is a tv connected to an android box.

I do not think it has anything to do with the file, because like I said if I play the same file in MX player it upscales just fine without black bars. So why does it leave black bars with xbmc?
You can't do a simple foto with your smartphone? Well, that's strange.

So, if you don't provide a Debug Log, or a proper screenshot/foto from the 16:9 TV, or answer questions... we can't help you.

Greetings
Yes a photo wouldn't be a problem I will post it tonight.
and while you do that, you can make a proper Debug Log, too.
how can I make a proper debug on an android box? Can you please guide me?

Following is the photo :

Thanks in advance.
The link I posted: Debug Log

should be guide enough if you would have looked at it Wink

But ok...go here:

And BTW...this photo is quite useless as well, because it's too dark. You can't see the TV itself...so you can't see how big those black bars are. Could you please post a new one with lights on?
I am sorry I did not notice that it was a link ! I will do it and even take another photo. Thanks again.
