i tried completely removing xbmc and following the command line install and the same thing happened, as soon as i go to open xbmc up it reboots my apple tv.
These are the commands i followed

apt-get install wget
wget -O- http://apt.awkwardtv.org/awkwardtv.pub | apt-key add -
echo "deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
echo "deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list
apt-get update
mkdir -p /Applications/AppleTV.app/Appliances
apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
mkdir -p /Applications/XBMC.frappliance
reboot
now i cant even get into my apple tv from command line. I put alpine in as my password and it says permission denied! what the heck is going on someone PLEASE help me
It sounds like something bigger might be broken. If you can't even log in anymore then you might need to rejailbreak. I'd make a post over at http://forum.firecore.com about this, as they make the ATV2 jailbreaking tool.
I did have to re jailbreak it, now onto another problem. Had to update my MBP to yosemite in order to get firecore to work but my apple remote does not work. Is there anyway to get it into DFU mode without the remote? I always use the remote app on my iPhone but without the apple tv connected to the wifi it doesn't work.
not possible without remote - also this is something for the firecore forum to ask about - not here...
