I've tried several skins and they all seem quite slow compared to the stock Krypton skin. Any suggestions for skins that are fast and lightweight?

Well, I (still) use confluence on an RPi. Since version 3.0.41 (not available in the main repos yet which seem to have 3.0.39) it works well on RPi with all sorts of fanart in the background when using a mythtv backend.
Still a list based view, but when you have more than 30 recordings much easier to manage imo.
