RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - djoole - 2015-11-24 Referring to http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=237686&pid=2164598#pid2164598, I would love to see DSPlayer becoming a Kodi addon, easier for aracnoz to maintain, and would love to see more devs taking interest in his player. It would be a tragedy to see its development being stopped because of aracnoz (the only dev) leaving the project (real life matters). I hope more devs come to help him in the near future. It's amazing that among all DSPlayer users no one has the will and skills to help him.. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - oldpoem - 2015-11-24 It's not that amazing. It's reality. Many DSPlayer users wish there are more than one dev working on this project. Because if the main and only dev leaved the development will stop. It happened a few times in the past. Users can hope and wish. But don't hold your breath. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - TheHobbyist - 2015-11-24 Man, I just read that thread and what a disappointment. I see that madshi and aracnoz are respectful and professional and the Kodi? devs in question are rude and unkind. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2015-11-24 I still think this is just for fun, but one can't discount the amount of hours and lines of code that went into making this software work. It is never going to be in vain, but the player is deserving of an audience. I post about DSPlayer in AVSForum, Doom9, Kodi and various other places on the Web because it is the only way to get the word out. Still to this day, there are people who know about Kodi, but they don't know anything about DSPlayer. The problem is they are looking for the exact features DSPlayer offers. These ask: Why can't I use DirectShow filters with Kodi? Why can't I find a solution better than MPC-HC to use madVR? Why is the playback experience of DVDPlayer so poor? etc., etc. Just yesterday, I found a user on AVSForum with a high-end 4K projector and a HTPC with a GTX 970. He was using DVDPlayer and couldn't understand why the experience was underwhelming but is now using DSPlayer to project onto a 150" anamorphic screen. Who with that set-up would want to use DXVA scaling from 1080p -> 2160p with regular Kodi using a $30,000 projector? This is what he claims he is using to project an image: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VPLVW1100ES-4096p-Theater-Projector/dp/B00HSI21UE. You would be stupid to use Kodi DVDPlayer with that. The only argument against DSPlayer deserving official support is its complexity. But I only see that as an argument on the set-up and set-up support side. As you can see in this thread, the number of issues with DSPlayer has been very small and isolated to a handful of issues. I think aracnoz deserves more respect and support from other developers, but I will continue to use the player as long as I choose Kodi as a media front-end. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - geofred1993 - 2015-11-24 @Warner306 You can use the spline36 scaler with the "official" kodi that is pretty good and natural looking. You can create a pull request to add nnedi3, debanding and other things into the new kodi videoplayer. As a happy dsplayer user I am not against including dsplayer in kodi for windows. But I understand the kodi dev team that wants a cross-platform solution. Another argument is: It would not benefit _any_ platform at all and windows - my dear friends - is only used on ~ 15 % of all kodi installations. We are much much more Aracnoz and Warner306 GO AHEAD RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Wanilton - 2015-11-25 @fritsch, number windows users estimated in fev/2015 = 35%. Now 15% I don´t believe is accurate. One previous statistics oct/2013 based only members use audio scrapers, have many more windows users If anyone have actual numbers members by platform, please share. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - djoole - 2015-11-25 KODI is used by people wanting a simple all in one solution and not regarding quality. DSPlayer is a niche software for people wanting the best quality possible (that's why i have a Windows HTPC and not an android box) I understand why Kodi dev team doesn't want DSPlayer. What I don't understand is why aracnoz is alone on this amazing project. Another argument is: It would not benefit _any_ platform at all and windows - my dear friends - is only used on ~ 15 % of all kodi installations. I understand your reasoning. Two notes, though: 1) Most open source devs do their work in their free time without payment. There are multiple possible reasons why devs do that. Some might just love programming and don`t need any extra motivation. Others might need a bit of appreciation to be motivated. Everybody is different. In regards to DSPlayer/aracnoz, I just wish communication would have been better (much better, actually). From what aracnoz told me, his posts were usually ignored by Team Kodi devs, his PMs not replied to by anybody, even after waiting 2 weeks. And when he went the extra mile to minimize the changes that would be needed in the Kodi code base to integrate DSPlayer, he didn't get any positive feedback at all. He was just ignored. And then some Team Kodi devs even complained that they didn't like that aracnoz didn't contribute to the Kodi code base. Basically he got the opposite of appreciation for all the work he's done. You gotta admit that this could (and should) have been handled much better. 2) I wonder if Kodi Windows users ever had a chance to vote for or against DSPlayer vs. DVDPlayer? If the majority of users doesn't care, or even prefers the "all-in-one" logic Kodi currently uses, that would put an end to the debate. If the majority is in favor of using DirectShow, though, that might be something that should not be ignored? To be honest, I've no idea which result such a vote would produce. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2015-11-25 madshi's post made me remember the guy I was helping eventually chose JRiver. Still madVR, but not DSPlayer. I made a mistake. Oh well, his loss. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2015-11-25 (2015-11-24, 23:18)geofred1993 Wrote: @Warner306 Yes, I do know about pixel shaders, but they don't use an anti-ringing filter. Just plugging new scaling algorithms into DVDPlayer would be nice, but wouldn't offer the same experience. The whole architecture would still need an overhaul to get the same result as madVR. I don't think this debate needs to turn nasty; DSPlayer users are as big a supporter of Kodi as a platform as anyone. But, open dialog about aracnoz's work shouldn't be put to the side without some talk about what he has done. It is good, reliable software from someone who is passionate about Kodi and who has put a lot of work into it. What is wrong with some recognition if not some official support? Putting an entry on the official blog would be nice. Or giving DSPlayer its own forum from the main tree are examples of support that would help increase awareness of this project. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2015-11-25 I also agree with the sentiment of providing at least one more developer to ensure the project doesn't die because aracnoz becomes busy. He can't be expected to be on here everyday to support a community in the small thousands or thousand. I was told the last release 15.2 had a thousand downloads in the first week. That is not a number requiring he quit his job and do this full-time.
