Elvis Platypus - Oli_Oops - 2011-05-25

I chose the platypus for the new XBMC mascot. Both the platypus and XBMC are amazing mixed media hybids.

Mascot Suggestion: Owl - yonar - 2011-05-26

Hi there

I'm no animator, but long time xbmc user and develop concepts for a living. I'd love to coin in my mascot idea, perhaps one of the animators reading this thread can make it into an image?

My Idea: an Owl!

why?

Owls are nocturnal
As most media centers and TV's, they sleep during the day

Owls live in trees
All media collections are organised in file trees, xbmc has branches, plenty of ground for this metaphor

Owls are hunters
They go out and hunt for the things they and it's offspring need

Night vision
They're great at seeing things in the dark, sounds like a media center to me

and of course... it just flies Smile

Edit: reading back what I just wrote, I see two all-seeing owl eyes open up above the logo (or close on shutdown). Just an afterthought Smile

I am in a process of activating my flickr account until then I will be using photobucket! Sorry Big Grin

Anyways this is not a mascot, but I thought I want people to know what XBMC is, when they look at my tshirt! So thats what came into my mind. I've done several designs but this one passed my "QC" LOL. I'm in a process of creating an "Icon/Emblem" that would go on the top right handside of the shirt "From the wearer side". For now I just wanted to share what I've done.

Introduction of myself and my first Mascott attempt - DavidC.Code - 2011-05-27

For further posting, I'd like to introduce myself. I am a Freelance Graphic Designer and I came across the contest, thanks to a note one of my friend left me one week ago. I am glad to be one more challenger in this contest! Here is my first post:

Here is my description:

Here is my first attempt to the XBMC contest for creating the mascott for their media center.

Using the design of their own logo, it became the inspiration for the two octopus tangled together (or making high five and all special moves). Note here the Steampunk side of their helmet, it feels a little more technologic and brainy. Hope you enjoy!

(For the logo, all right reserved to XBMC; my use of this logo is in the only purpose of the Mascott Contest in which I agree to take part)

Some questions that may need answering:

Why a human?
XBMC is always striving to evolve and improve their technology. Their image and skins all have a high level of sophistication. A human represents that sophistication and strive very well. It's also easier to identify with.

Why a girl?
A mascot is used to reach a target demographic and appeal to them. The majority of XBMC users are probably male. Guys like girls. Girls are attractive.
If race cars can have race queens, why can't XBMC?

Why anime?
A large number of XBMC users are anime fans. Also, anime is a very appealing and consistent style making it easy to identify with.
Anime has increased in popularity. Big enough for Toyota to use Miku Hatsune to represent their new Corolla in North America.

Someone had mentioned here before, the majority of XBMC users are not tinkerers, and don't participate in the forums very much, just like those who are buying the "Set it and Forget it" OpenELEC HTPC. What appeals to them is very different from what appeals to forum-goers. I think this is an important point that needs emphasizing, and also the main reason why I went with this mascot. What do you guys think?

I'd wear that any day! I like the shirt and the silhouette version of it. Chibi versions are fine. A green miku would have been cool too. Knowing my anime sources, the character reminds me of Ranka Lee from Macross Frontier. Anyhow, could there be a less thrifty adult attire to appeal to a more conservative crowd?

A male mascot could work too. Can't rule out female watchers either. Maybe one could vector a trendy male model like some Micheal Jackson (as an example) to appeal to a larger crowd and not just the "anime" crowd.

As for other submissions, I do like the angry lemming and the Zapy since they're neutral and rather easy to draw and use as an icon/logo/etc. It would pretty cool to see a Zapy breakdancing like the android dancing in the mall. http://youtu.be/odhQIgBOEZU

I'd just like to say that this is by far my favourite so far, clean, gorgeous and a brilliant concept. Exactly the modern, clean look I think XBMC should have.

same thoughts here. Simplistic minimalism is an art in itself and very desirable. Works well on business cards too.

A few pages back, Ubuntu4fun gave me some good feedback about my mascot design being a bit too naughty for the adult version, and too kiddie for the cute version. So I came up with a new illustration of her looking in between the two, and also changed her outfit to be less revealing. I gave her a more early 70's fashion with the retro go-go boots, and even a laser gun.

Image

I also decided that maybe she needed a cute side-kick (for merchandising potential) called Server-Cat. Could also call him Samba-Cat too, I guess. lol.

And to top it off, I did some different facial expressions for the mascot girl.

If you can't tell by now, I want to win this really badly. Laugh

@Radiant dreamer, you are very talented, but I dont really like the anime look to xbmc. Stick to something more gender neutral and more family friendly and id vote for ya. the zappy and the X fish thingy looks great. My xbmc is in my sitting room and i dont want to be the anime guy to all my friends and family that come over.
