Here's my take on the subject,
I have never been a contestant anywhere but I'd like to contribute to xbmc somehow.
I have just drawn the sketch of what I think a mascot should look like.
I know I have to post the polished vector version, but I thought I'd post the sketch and then update the post with the progress I will make, or maybe I'll just post another idea.

I chose a sloth as a mascot, since we (me especially) get really lazy on the couch with xbmc: you can have a whole plethora of media at your fingertips and don't even need to get up and change disc!

Comments are welcome, see you soon!

my image creation skills suck, but I figured I would throw the concept I have in my head into the ring...it would basically show the evolution of XBMC as a program from its beginning to its current /future state. Just an idea.. hopefully I will come up with something more concrete

Just took a look at the sloth drawing, if done right, you could almost make the white on his face look like the "X" from the XBMC logo.

Just a comment.

Maybe if you can make it very discreet, but I think xbmc's logo-only approach is very classy.

I don't want to look at stupid bears on my media center, ever... No offense to the guys who made em haha... they are cute and everything, but I don't like the idea of seeing this creature branded anywhere...

+1

so far i like grumpygamer´s sloth! It looks funny.

But to be honest. It could be a good idea to have no mascot. Because there will be people who don´t like a specific mascot. You can´t meet the taste of all people.
Me for example don´t like the MediaPortal Mascot. It makes me kind of angry looking at it. I don´t know why.

I agree that a mascot would be nice but shouldnt make it into the skins as it takes away from the slik unbranded feel of XBMC. I dont want to stare at a creature on my screen when navigating around my media as it gives it the pre-school feel. with that aside, I really like the panda bear logos. theres a lot of potential with that idea. and scaled down its obviously a panda. maybe incorporate the letters X,B,M & C into the design more, like you have with the X. however i'm not keen on the one with the X, i preferred the previous one which still had the feel of an "X" in the design due to it paws being laid out in an "x" design.

As for all the robot logos, come on people, have a little originality, stop chasing the Android train and think fresh.

Just to clear things up (for me) I do like the panda idea myself but that's not what I think they are looking for when they write mascot. The panda idea is more like a logo to me, whilst a mascot is what you see on sports for example (Lakers mascot anyone?), cereals mascot, etc...
Obviously both a mascot can be "ported" to a logo and vice versa...

My attempt - psybertech - 2011-05-04

I thought I'd give it a go.

I have a few variants of this which are mostly color changes.
Full size and other variants can be viewed in the FLICKR set.

The idea was to represent what XBMC is as something living, so the things that popped that worked were a TV, Play/Pause controls, RSS feeds, Wireless data and a loose adaptation of the X in the logo which got me to this guy.
I haven't named him yet.... unless you can pronounce the file name of XBMCme (zib-mick-me perhaps?) :p

Here's the panda again looking less logo-ish and more of a character. He's got the bean bag chair going on and the coloured remote accessory. I tried to stick with the XBMC logo colours.

A black and white panda is fairly easy to do variations on and give him extra accessories/plugins the same way XBMC does.
