Subtitle position selectable relative to video frame - Aardvark - 2011-08-19

Hi spiff/jmarshall/All,

In http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/10281 a patch is marked Future/Pending to implement this feature. As far as I read the trac comments there is no outstanding request to change or fix anything, is there any change it will be accepted? If not: what should change?

(Maybe it was just lost: I could not find any development forum thread relating to the patch so I created this new one.)

Saw this and initially mis-understood what it fixed/enhanced... This idea nay be related...

I've recently discovered the xbmc subtitles addon and one issue I've had is the alignment of the subtitles with respect to time. In the same way we have adjustment of audio timing relative to the video, could the same be done for subtitles?

Cheers,

Steve

nope, not even remotely the same.

subtitles have timestamps on them and xbmc displays subtitle line according to that. You can shift subtitles if you enter audio setup menu in OSD and use Subtitle delay/ahead slider.

please search the wiki and forums, alternatively open the new forum post if you get stuck.

I'm a bit confused, is this incorporated into the current stable XBMC release? If so, where are the settings for it? I see this http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=99826 but don't know if this means it's in the current release or if there is some way to enable it.

I have a 2.35 projector screen, so I need the subs to be positioned relative to the video image, not the screen size. I can't even adjust this on a (tedious) case by case basis because the subtitle positioning in the video calibration, while changing the position of the bar in the calibration, has no effect on the actual subtitles when viewing the movie in almost all of the movies I've tried.

Nightlies only, and will be in Eden. Not in Dharma.

Guess I'll have to try the nightlies then. As it is, 2.35 movies with subtitles are unwatchable for me.

Steve, I don't know if you are still following this but yes, what you ask has actually been in XBMC for a very long time (it was there in 2005 when I started using it on Xbox). Check the wikie, actually...
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Keymap.xml#Actions

Check there and look for:

SubtitleDelayMinus
Decrease the delay amount of subtitles (use if subtitles are displaying too late)
SubtitleDelayPlus
Increase the delay amount of subtitles (use if subtitles are displaying too early)

You can bind these on a key on your keyboard or on a button on your remote and adjust subs on the fly while watching video content.

By the way, it seems that along with this feature, the same thing is needed for the OSD, so that the OSD, like the subtitles, are not off-screen for anyone zooming the image (as with a 2.35 screen).

- Smelina - 2011-10-14

Wow, this is the option I'm waiting for! I'm running projector with the masking system, so subtitles are pretty much unusable since I'm not willing to give up on contrast ratio. However, there is no need to have the same option for the OSD for me.

- jubilex - 2011-10-25

Hmm, I've just installed the latest nightly, and no matter what I set the option to -- fixed, above video, top of video, below video, bottom of video -- it has no effect on the subtitle placement for any movie in my collection. Am I doing something wrong? Most of these movies have embedded subs, a few have .srt in the same folder, one has .sup.

I just installed the latest nightly and it works perfectly. This is a great feature!
