XBMC not playing some files - Krazypoloc - 2011-08-24

I built my buddy 2 HTPC's several months ago. I also built the file server that all his files are stored on. I will not specify the source of the files that are not working but they do play with MPC-HC on the PC and they will play on my HTCP but neither one of his HTPC's which are both identical in hardware and software.

Here is an excerpt from the logs.

Full debug will tell more. Will any playback locally (smb errors in except).

I'm not sure...I can have him try them locally. Also worth mentioning that playback from library mode buffers for 30 seconds before playing, but from file mode it plays right away. I have a MySQL database setup on the server and both the HTPC XBMC boxen are pulling from the DB. Everything is extremely fast as far as navigation, its just when he tries to play a movie it buffers for 30-60 seconds. This is a really high end server with an enterprise grade RAID controller...so its not a bottleneck there for sure.

I will enable full debug mode and try the file locally.

CWINFileSMB: Unable to open file '\' Error '5

is an intriguing error. The Win32 error code 5 is "access denied", which seems straightforward, but the log is recording the file name as "\" and this is very odd.

Yes its extremely weird....these are coming from Couch Potato so maybe CP is changing the perms on the files...

When you move a file it keeps whatever permissions it had before (when you copy a file it inherits the permissions of the destination folder). If Couch Potato is creating the file then moving it, check the permissions on whatever directory Couch Potato is creating the file in.

Awesome work JR! I checked and file perms for the files were inherited from another folder which does not have the "Everyone" group added to it for perms. And as XBMC is using the guest account to authenticate it did not have access to the files. Thanks!

You guys have any idea what would cause the movies to buffer for 30 seconds when played from library mode but not file mode?

We'll need to see a debug log. Enable debug logging from System settings, System, Debugging, and restart XBMC, play one of the troublesome films (tel us which) then close XBMC again.

A quick way to open the debug log is to press Windows-R and in the Run dialog type:

"%appdata%\xbmc\xbmc.log"

(including the quotes). Click OK and the log should open in Notepad. Copy and paste the log into pastebin.com and post the link it gives you here.

I am having the same issue... My MKV starts playing (movie - LIMITLESS), then crashes after a few minutes. Here's my debug log.

Thanks for any help...

This is not the same issue that I am having at all. Please start your own thread. Thanks!

- LakersFan - 2011-08-26

Whoops, thanks poloc. Sorry about that buddy.

- Krazypoloc - 2011-08-26

Thanks for being such a gentleman about it! Smile

- Krazypoloc - 2011-08-26

Ok I was over at my buddies last night and enabled full debug logging....but I can't seem to find anything in the logs about the initialization of playback at all....I was able to find this earlier by just doing a "find" in Notepad++ and searching the movie name I was trying to play....but it just isn't spitting that info out in the logs for some reason.

I can give a little more detail as to what happens though....when I click on the movie from the movie wall screen in library mode the CPU goes from single digit percentage usage to 60%-70% usage for 30-60 seconds, then drops back down to the single digit percentages as I have the GPU decoding the video via DXVA. And this is with a triple core AMD CPU....IDK WTF would cause this....

- jhsrennie - 2011-08-26

When you open a film XBMC attempts to analyse it before playing it. I've seen reports in the forum where XBMC was taking 30 seconds to analyse the film, possibly because of something unexpected in the embedded info that's confusing XBMC.

Under some circumstances it can be a film that is different to the one being played. That's why i want to see a debug log.
