Debian Hipster says "ARM Compiled binaries? I was doing that before it was cool."

You may not even need the IR dongle+remote, instead HDMI CEC and the original TV remote could be used to control R-Pi XBMC.

Jaken Wrote:@sraue
Why only model B? With a usb ethernet adapter the model A should be equally useful for XBMC.

It certainly should now that the Model A has the same RAM complement as the Model B, and the only remaining difference is the lack of ethernet.

Perhaps sraue based his opinion on the Model A as it was originally specified with only 128MB RAM, which may not have been sufficient to run XBMC.

So does anyone think other manufacturer are going to try and make something like this? I was thinking about maybe waiting for V2 of the R Pi maybe..

Thoughts??

Theres certainly others in the pipeline, one was posted on here a few pages back, but this isnt really the place to discuss them, but yeah im certain we'll see plenty of development in this area, and i'd be very surprised if devices like RasPi arent one day integrated into devices like TVs to instantly give the owner the basic features of a home PC & media center.

If the Pi can be produced and sold for £30 at a profit, imagine what the likes of Sony, Samsung, Panasonic etc could do by selling their customers the latest TV with integrated PC/Media Center or whatever they wanted to wrap it up as. Something like that would easily justify adding £100 onto the rrp cost of a base model. All in 1 remote too, no wires, just a network cable, hell they could add wifi if they wanted.

^Yep, i could see all of the above happening. This might be just the beginning of a golden age for media PC integration into TVs. Smile

I found this link that actually lets you pre-order a board on newark's site and gives you an estimated date for shipping. Thought others might be interested since until I found this when ever I visited their site it only let me sign up to show I am interested. It says it is for PCBA, but all the specs, order information and price match PCBB.

http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=83T1943

Also their front page has a code for free shipping on orders over $100, for anyone that might be interested in ordering several.

There should be a limit of only 1 per order for the time being.

Mines ~10 days, and afaik thats the first batch, its mainly a case of shipping as these are pre-orders not in-stock sales. The Pi folks didnt have the capability to start taking paid preorders (commitment to purchase) but the deal with the distro's does, so thats what they're doing. We'd have to wait just as long, its just that now they can at least start taking commitments for them.

Been having a bit more of a play with what I hope will be my Pi case.

99% of whats modelled I did about a month ago, i just never found where they'd hidden the rendering software (used to be separate, seems its now integrated) so i've been having fun making pretty images Big Grin

I've never used lighting in the past, just used the stock scene settings, but then i spotted the lighting settings and figured i could pop a couple of small coloured lights behind the case lid to act as LEDs, however i cant quite get it right so ive had to fake it a little by giving the coloured perspex an illumination property (its lighting itself a little) and the coloured lights are giving highlights and a bit of underglow too to make it look about right. I was seeing some lighting reflections i just couldnt understand what was creating them doing it properly, so i cheated! Big Grin

The plastic case is shop bought from Maplin for about £4.30 iirc, im just planning on cutting out the sockets, machining a basic logo into the lid, and illuminating it. The shipping for the perspex will cost as much as the case Big Grin
