It's happening with every movie I've tried so far. When playback starts, the Samsung TV panel is switching mode and then I just get weird patterns. I'm not seeing macroblocking. If I then hit the \ key to window XBMC, the content can then be seen. But as XBMC has switched my TV's mode from JustScan to 16:9, the Unity menus are off the side of the screen.
By the way I previously had a working 11.10 installation with XBMC working nicely. I made the mistake of upgrading to 12.04 :-) Hah, oh well..

Here's the mediainfo of a typical file. Do you want a chunk of the media file uploading somewhere? If so let me know where.

Thanks!

@surfziggy:
From a first look, the mediainfo seems fine. Can you try booting with the xmbcbuntu frodo live cd? I think something concerning your catalyst got broken during the update.

In general: Please turn debugging on and send us a xbmc.log.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/1107686/

Will try the live CD later.

Can you please start xbmc directly from lightdm session?. I think something pulseaudio? is blocking your soundcard.

Do I need it and can I uninstall it. By the way I seem to have 'fixed' the display issue another waym which was to disable the setting in XBMC that syncs the display to the video refresh rate. I think this was causing my Samsung panel (LA40M81) to end up in an unsupported display mode.

RE: Howto Install XBMC PVR Xvba for AMD/ATI Radeon and Fusion GPUs - fritsch - 2012-07-24

@surfziggy:

Did you change "Adjust Refresh Rate to match video" or did you change "Sync Playback to Display"?
It would be great to get the output of /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr -q if this is possible for you?

RE: Howto Install XBMC PVR Xvba for AMD/ATI Radeon and Fusion GPUs - surfziggy - 2012-07-24

Adjust is OFF, sync is ON

all modes you'd need are there, so it should work with Adjust ON

After manual instalation of 64-bit 12.04 Ubuntu Precise minimal the 100% cpu one core problem is gone. I think the problem is in XBMCFREAK iso http://xbmcfreak.binkey.nl/xbmcbuntu-11.9-wsnipex-testing-v2.iso. I have testet on to amd e350 with same result.

@golddk:
If you upgrade after xbmcfreak installation, everything should be fine.

Hi all,

I would like your help for a bug i always encountered with XBMC on my installation, here are the symptoms:

- after a few random hours of idle ( minimum 2-3 hours, sometimes up to 8-10 hours) XBMC freezes and nothing responds, no mouse, no keyboard
- i still can SSH to my host, i can see 1 core CPU fully busy by xbmc.bin process
- Impossible to kill xbmc process even with kill -9, trying to restart lightdm doesn't change anything
- Only a reboot recovers the system

I could find with the hour shown by xbmc (as it freezes the hour keeps the same), that it was related to a message in /var/log/kern.log beginning by:
[fglrx] ASIC hang happened

I searched on many forums and posts related to ATI driver and XBMC, i could not find something reliable...

XBMC log does not show anything special, same messages as usual when the bug occurs.

I am actualy running Xubuntu 12.04, kernel 3.2.26, xbmc-xvba-eden (recently updated) with catalyst 12.4, i had the same issue with previous XBMC eden pre-compiled version, Ubuntu kernels and so on.

The only workaround i found for now was to write a small shell watchdog that watches kern.log for the "ASIC hang happened" pattern and initiate system reboot.

I could also try to get more stability with 12.6 catalyst (i don't believe it ^^) but this version is very buggy, HD radeon 6310 are seen as unsupported hardware and you have to apply a workaround to delete unsupported watermarck screen, also aticonfig command can't be used...

Has anyone encountered the same issue ?

Please find the extracted kern.log : http://pastebin.com/8KLg14bu

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I found in the post overwritting /etc/ati/control should make aticonfig to work again, i will upgrade to 12.6 catalyst and see if the bug still occurs... ^^

Thks

@guilmxm

Hi! I have encountered the exact same problem. Xbmc dosen't reply, one core is @ 100% usage and u kant kill -9 xbmc.bin . only solution is a reboot.
Mostly this happens if display is turned of (while playing music). I was unable to provide usefull debug logs, So how may I provide more usefull informations?
