Newbie looking for some help. - Happy - 2012-03-17

Hi folks,

I've been browsing this forum for a week or so now and I find it all very confusing. I was directed here by a friend who has a jailbroken ATV2 but doesn't have the time or patience to jailbreak an ATV2 for me. I suffer from a form or Autism called Aspergers Syndrome so I find things like this very confusing. If people are going to be kind enough to help me then I am going to need very clear, very simple step by step answers.

My friends set-up is a jailbroken ATV2 running XBMC with all his movies on a hard drive with no iTunes. Whatever version of XBMC he has he has the weather on location on screen when turned on. Also there was some kind of screen saver that looked like a large amount of red seats pointed at a cinema screen. This is what I would ultimately like to do to my ATV2.

I have still to jailbreak my ATV2 and I've never done anything like this before which leads to my first question...

Can someone tell how I would go about jailbreaking my ATV2?

I can't find out how to edit my signature which is where I want to put the following so I'll just post them here

Mid 2009 MacBook Pro
Apple TV2 on Firmware 4.4.4
Apple Airport Extreme
iPad 2 (16GB WiFi)
iPhone 4S (16GB)

Thank you very much. I shall have a look at them when the moment is right for my brain to take something I think may be complex, 'in', so to speak.Smile

Start with iOS FAQ (wiki)

Thank you.

Some of that I understand, but most of it is way over my head.Huh

What might seem easy to understand to one person is very much the opposite for me.Sad And what might seem easy and logical to someone with Aspergers could seem totally illogical and difficult to someone without.

When I say I need simple instructions I do mean the simplest of simplest instructions.

ie

Connect ATV to Laptop

Go to such and such a website

Download such and such

and so on and so on.

If there happened to be a video of the whole process from start to finish on YouTube or somewhere then that would make things 100 times easier for me.Smile

I hate to be a nuisance and I understand some people will be reluctant to help me (a bit like my so called 'friend' who can't find the time of time of day for me) but I would be eternally grateful to anyone that helps me Jailbreak my ATV and install xbmc.Smile

I've tried 3 times to Jailbreak now and 3 times I've got this.Sad

I bought my ATV2 secondhand/used. The only thing I can think of is the person I bought it from has reported it lost/stolen to Apple and they are blocking it. Could that be possible?

It will be because Apple have stopped signing iOS 4.4.4 because the new 5.0 update is out. But first DO NOT UPDATE! Most important point there. You will have to grab the shsh blobs off of the apple tv using TinyUmbrella and then fake apples servers when restoring so that you can do it. Basically apple thinks you are "Downgrading" your apple tv.

Try the instructions here and then run the reinstall in iTunes with he firmware that Seas0npass made.

RE: Newbie looking for some help. - Memphiz - 2012-03-19

TBH it is complicated to downgrade with SHSH blobs. If your friend is able to do it, i would try to convince him that its a good thing to do it for you. Try buying him some beer or so Wink.

This would be the best structured HowTo i can think of. It even has a video and is special to your problem where ios 4.4.4 is installed and apple doesn't sign that version anymore.

http://www.jailbreakappletv.com/jailbreak-apple-tv-2-running-5-0-1-or-less-after-apple-stopped-signing-older-firmware-versions/

I know it might be confusing to get so much different information here but thats normal. Wink.

Beside that normally we don't discuss jailbreaking problems in our forums. We already have enough support stuff to do for XBMC alone. So if nothing helps here please try to find some help in dedicated jailbreak forums like:

http://forum.firecore.com

http://jailbreakqa.com

or the link i've given above...

Hi,

My 'friend' Jailbroke his ATV2 back in December which I think was before the 5.1 update for ATV2?

I'll have a look at that video, thanks.Smile (I have a Mac and the instructions say it can only be used with WindowsSad )

More forums? Sad

One is complicated enough.

I think my best bet is to wait for a Jailbreak to iOS5.1 to become available. Does anyone know how far away such a jailbreak is?

Nobody knows and there's talk that it might be the more difficult Apple Device to jailbreak.

Just for the sake of completeness, here's the twitter feed which is the source of the info that the ATV3 might be difficult to JB:
