Intermittent playback failure - - jingo_man - 2012-05-02 19:51
Since I rebuilt my XBMC to Ubuntu 11.10 with XBMC Eden installed, on intermittent basis, the playback of many library item fails. This never happened on my earlier build with the same components, just Ubuntu 10.10, XBMC Dharma and possibly the nVidia 190.x drivers. Alsa was the same, but I think it had an alternative config applied.
The file in question will start the audio and the main screen will switch to, and stay, black. The audio continues for 9 seconds, then the playback timer continues in the top corner (I have the Aeon Nox skin) for more seconds, but nothing works as expected. At this point, I cannot control playback from the remote or via XBMC Commander on my iPad.
The only working solution I have so far is to SSH into the box and reboot it. Obviously not girlfriend acceptable...
I have the Asus P5N7A-VM board, with the nVidia 195.x drivers, the default Alsa 1.0.24 install, LIRC for the MCE remote, and obviously XBMC.
My XBMC Audio Output is set to "hdmi (ALSA)", same as the passthrough. Though I do not see a specific entry called "hdmi" in the ~/.asoundrc file in my profile, but others of the sort, such as "pcm.hdim_hw".
The contents of the standard log file is below from the most recent failure. It is intermittent, so capturing with debugging on isn't easy as leaving it on with the other half doesn't go down well. I can do it if its necessary, but hoping someone can help without needing too...
Hoping for any input.

Check this thread about freeze, might help you? Experienced the same before update XBMCbuntu to 12.04
RE: Intermittent playback failure - - tarmo13 - 2012-05-02 22:14
I have the same issue since I installed fresh eden/xbmcbuntu on my htpc Packard Bell iMax (ION based).
I tried differents themes and randomly this issue appears.
I even tried xbmcfreak version but same result.
I never had this kind of problem with my previous Dharma version
So, seeking for solution ..
Any idea ?

As you can see tarmo13, I'm running ION to and my signature was changed about 5 days ago and still valid :-D
I recommend you read the refered thread and follow the _right_ steps to upgrade to the version 12.04 as it is a LTS version
Hope you not has more than 3GIG ram as it gave me a big scare with the OpenGL bug/problem, but the thread explain that too.
Try it out and hopefully you will be happy.
BTW: I was playing around with ALSA settings and sometimes XBMC refused to start and other times it crash when playing a video, so be careful. If you need just search my latest post for a working "/.asoundrc" for HDMI output and correct channel output for HD sound and navigation sound, but haven't found any setting that work for both HD sound and crossfade.
I think this thread is a duplikat of http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=119855 , close this thread and continnue in the other.

I have been reading through the post you provided, the sub-links in this thread and off into the wider world.
I will try the 12.04 upgrade to resolve my issues.
But first, what would be the best/simplest means to back up the XBMC PC from the terminal (preferably via SSH)? I see that there is a new backup tool in the Unity desktop (GUI), but I auto-boot directly into XBMC.
And second, will a simple "sudo do-release-upgrade" from an SSH session, or is it better to boot into the Unity desktop?
It is a shame, tarmo13, Dharma was so stable for me too. The WAF/GAF factor is seriously waning at the moment!!! Haha.

Sorry for the late answer
Not sure about the rest as I'm single at the moment
But just run it from SSH as I did.
BTW: I used FileZilla last time to backup my folders (settings, pictures, ...)

Yeah, I thought about it and I only have the video and audio config on top of XBMC anyway, so I didn't bother with the backup as I could rebuild it easily.
As I was back in the Unity desktop session trying to look at the new backup utility in 11.10, I just ran the distro upgrade in there. When done, after couple reboots, I just reset the desktop session back to "XBMC" at the login screen.
So far, no occurrences of the screen freeze issue... Oh no, have I jinxed it
