XBMC on ATV 1, choppy mkv 720p & 1080p playback - IAV33 - 2012-05-10

I've been using my ATV 1 with broadcom crystal card in for a while with no issues playing 720pm and 1080p mkv files. At the weekend I updated my XBMC software and I'm unable to get smooth playback of the files. Not only are they choppy but they keep buffering. I've tried a few files and have played them on my windows 7 laptop with VLC player so I know its the ATV/XBMC set up.

Any ideas ... could it be another software update? Thanks in advance.

do you stream your content on the network to your ATV/XBMC or do you have an external plugged into the USB port on the ATV?

Hi, thanks for responding, been away. Ok, I seem to have resolved it by power cycling a number of times. BTW, its streamed over the network (via homeplugs) rather than USB port on the ATV1.

I'd like to add that I am having the same issue. In my setup I have Yamaha AV amp which receives both Audio and Video from a HDMI connector to a 1GB DDR graphic card which is in a HP N40L Proliant microserver running Windows 2008.. No network involved. I was running Eden and saw later version (Frodo Alpha 2) apparently had better audio and thought that would sort it. Loading that completely screwed up the sound on all types of output including music. I messed around with it for a few days and managed to get some movies to play by changing the Audio setting from HDMI to one of the others (Coaxial?) even though I have no other audio input into the AV amp. I got fed up up and now I have removed Frodo and I am back to Eden 11.0.
The problem with HD movies still remains though. Very jerky and the sound is out of synch with the video. I will try and tie down to see if it's a particular file format and/or video type.

I'm having the same issue. I had big expectations after installing the crystal card and CrystalHD. All my 1080p video stutter and buffer. I'll post up the debug tomorrow if anyone is still paying attention to this thread. On Crystalbuntu the log file is here, /root/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log, right?

Thanks guys!

I think this is the right debug?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
FYI: I was trying to play Hugo 2011 BRRip XvidHD 1080p-NPW.avi

crystalhd is not used to decode .avi files. Those are MPEG-4 part 2. You want MEPG-4 part 10, otherwise known as h264. Those are typically found in .mkv files.

davilla: thanks for the heads up. That's a bummer! I'll try some .mkv files.

Thanks again!

Just as a heads up, i was actually getting stuttering on .mkv containers as well.

I found this post which resolved that when I made the change this morning:

What OS are you using? There's some MKV tools that might be able to extract the video files and put them in an MKV container, so you don't have to re-download/rip/or re-encode.

Thanks

MakeMKV (wiki) or MKVToolNix (wiki) might be good, then.

I'm a bit panicked and could use some insight. I bought a Broadcom BCM970015 online and read through the description and bought, but afterwards the title of the sale was different from the write up in relation to the 1080i vs 1080p. I came here for more info and found this XBMC wiki link

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Broadcom_Crystal_HD

and it talks about the Broadcom BCM970015 as doing: H.264/AVC HP at L 5.1 1080p/1080i, 40 Mbps

but what I am panicked about is are there/were there Broadcom BCM970015 cards that only do 1080i? It's one little letter but I prefer Progressive over Interlaced.

This is the title of the ad:

Broadcom BCM970015 HD Crystal Hardware Decoder for 1080i Apple TV

This is the write up on the ad:
