Core i3-2100 or A6-5400 - kchao - 2012-10-09

Hi All,

Looking to build my first HTPC and torn between the two. Tiger Direct has a deal for the i3 so pricing between the two processors is essentially the same ($10 difference). I've done a bunch of research but given how new the AMD processor is, it's hard been hard to find an apples to apples comparison between these two particular chips. The i3 has great reviews overall but wondering if the newer A6 chip with the (seemingly?) better GPU will be a better choice.

I'm sure both chips are sufficient for playing 1080p and streaming but just wondering if you had a choice between the two, which would you choose?

Thanks!

Given the two CPU's, I'll go for the latest A6-5400K......

A6-5400K is currently THE cpu to get for your windows driven htpc!

Ok, that's three votes for A6-5400K. Now, why?

Please know by asking this, I am not disputing the choice. I know at least one person in this thread will take this as argumentative but I genuinely want to know since I have not used one yet. I'd really like to know what's better about it than something else or everything else.

So, I'd love to hear any experiences, pointer to new reviews, etc. so I can read more than the obvious "it's got a better GPU". Everything seems to be all about A10-5800K.

TIA.

the AMD seams better but we won't know for sure before it's been out there for a couple of months.. If you have the money the ivy i3 is a much safer choice (3220/3225)

I just said Plus 1 because it seems this might just replace the A6-3500 chip... I don't know anyone who has used it so really I can not recommend it.

Seems that people wan't the latest stuff from all the reads...

I guess I should not say +1 on it since there is no reviews on this...

I am really looking forward to FM2 mini-itx motherboards to become available so I can try it out. I do hope though something more like the A6-3500 is coming and that these aren't all the Trinity APUs we'll see. For now though it does seem to be the heir to A6-3500. I'd love to see a comparison of how the dual core Trinity A6 stacks up against the triple core Llano A6 and how the HD7450D compares to the HD6530D.

It's so more expensive... if you have the money well yes but if just HTPC well it all depends on what brand you like the most.

Or, is A6-3500 still the "much safer choice". :-P so hard to know at this point.

I wouldn't buy it just yet, here is why:
New chipset - possible driver issues and hardware issues as seen on first generation
New apu - same issues as chipset + drivers for the gpu might give you trouble

Great in 2-3 months, not a cleaver move just yet...

Maybe it's good then it'll take a while for the mini-ITX boards to come out. By then there'll be more experiences with it.

This is true.... that is why I have recommended the a6-3500 because it has passed the test many times....

Lets wait a few months until we know the trinity is stable then start to recommend.

But this time I am not going to be the guinea pig. I am done.... Blush
