I thought price did not matter bluray? Blush I did read a lot of you suggesting the i3-3225 and thought you where going to build one.
As I suggested many times, if they are okay with the price of Intel i3-3225 it should make a powerful HTPC.....

I think the i3-3225 is a pretty steep price. Basically everybody is paying all that extra $$$ to get the better iGPU but what does that really buy you? If you are using it for video/media playback then the answer is nothing. If you want to game on the iGPU then Intel is not the best option. If you absolutely must have Intel and want to game then IMO you are better off going for a Pentium G850 + a mid-range graphics card (i.e. GT 440) rather than an i3-3225. You are getting way more capability for maybe $10 more.
Intel G850 + AMD HD6670 should make a powerful HTPC.....with extra GPU/Fan, I'm worry about heat and noise in a tight case....it's double the price of AMD A6-5400K as well....

RE: Core i3-2100 or A6-5400 - Dougie Fresh - 2012-10-17

I just got my Sapphire LP 6670 yesterday so I am trying it first with a i3-2120T I already have in the E-i7 mini-ITX case with a 180W power supply. If I can find a drive to install Windows 8 on, I should have some observations, temps and power usage soon.

Sure it costs more but it also would outperform the A6-5400K as well.

While you are at it... just get the G870... Wink and a 6770 would make a good gaming machine...

what you think wsume99?

RE: Core i3-2100 or A6-5400 - wsume99 - 2012-10-18

A G870 + HD6670 would be even better but it costs ~$20 more. I was trying the keep the price in-line with what the i3-3225 would be.

G860 + HD6670 is cheaper Big Grin

It won't fit in an E-i5 case though.

That is a situation where I think it makes sense to go with Trinity with the understanding that you'd be sacrificing performance for a smaller footprint. This also assumes that Trinity does not have the heat problems that Llano does.

The 65W A6-3500 is fine for the Realan E-i5 mini-itx case so here's hoping the Trinity 65W parts will be too. I am looking forward to testing one since 65W TDP for one generation might not mean the same power/heat/etc. for the next generation. 100W TDP is out of the question, especially since all the low-profile AMD coolers are rated 65W max.

intel i7-3960X + EVGA 04G-P4-2690-KR GeForce GTX 690
i win

but seriously, this is a huge discussion about what your htpc can give you and if it does everything you want it to, then that's what matters

i have the a6-5400k... and a microatx motherboard..
now i know i probably only saved $50-$100 overall... but i found that compromise price + power, this is what i needed (especially since i wanted to do some emulation along with running my xbmc htpc dream machine)
if you have unlimited budget, then take the best that you can that will fit

if not, target the things that will make your machine run as smoothly as possible

and just as a side note, with 8 gig of cheap ram (1333 kingston valueram), i boot into xbmc through windows in about 25 seconds...it is basically an appliance

just my 2 cents

+1.....the price is right, and it's more than enough for HTPC purpose......

Since you already have A6-5400K, do you have any issue with AMD 12.8 driver? Some guys in here think that it might have some problem with the latest Trinity.....

after i put the build together and installed windows, i went straight to amd's site and downloaded the latest drivers and it instantly worked without a hitch...everything was detected and ran beautifully on my tv

the reviews are starting to come in on newegg, and although by far not the most powerful chip on the market, one of the best bets for price/ratio and the reviews from actual consumers are showing it (i think everyone has given it 5 eggs so far)

so all that to say, yes, the driver runs fine in my experience so far...knock on wood

RE: Core i3-2100 or A6-5400 - tazz0710 - 2012-10-23

With the A6-5400k would you be able to do all of the emulation? Or should i go with A10-5800K

Dolphin
Hyperspin
with PSX xbox?

i can't comment on others...but dolphin (wii) runs without a problem with fast fps settings (great help on youtube and/or other forums for that)...
from what i've read, dolphin and pcsx2 are the most cpu intense so those are the two biggest worries

i've read in a few places that pcsx2 might be able to run as well but haven't been able to check it out yet...

psx runs...but the software for it is beyond crappy...you can't expect much when most of the emulators haven't been updated for years
i've tried pcsx reloaded and epsxe... but ran okay...but had some problems. It's more of a plugin/settings problem i'm sure because as soon as i changed the plugin, things ran smoother...so i have to tinker around with it

i haven't tried hyperspin and xbox emulation is apparently even more picky than psx emulation...so i haven't tried that yet either...hope that helps a little

edit: didn't say it in this post, but as you can see from my previous post, i have the a6-5400k

It's not the most powerful CPU/iGPU, but the price/spec are right for HTPC....
