RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - Spacedementia87 - 2014-04-24

Hi there,

I have just done a fresh install of trusty and installed using this method. On first boot everything was fine.

Installed a few addons and changed the skin, imported my library. Rebooted and now the menu is incredibly slow, cpu usage is very high

What is wrong?

dmesg: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7321819/
xbmc.log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7321822/
Xorg: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7321824/
vdpauinfo: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7321825/ ("DISPLAY=:0 vdpauinfo | pastebinit" gives and error "Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Error creating VDPAU device: 1" is this the issue? how do I fix it?)

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-04-24

WTF is that line coming from:
Quote:ro quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1920x1080-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap

it's absolutely not in that howto. Whoever copied my howto and added this had no single clue on what he is doing. That disables the OSS drivers, disables the KMS settings only for a shiny splash screen, which can easily be done with the radeonfb that is in place by default ....

Please provide a link to that nonsense.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - Spacedementia87 - 2014-04-24

Ahh, so do you think that might fix it.

I have clueless with Linux really and this was from an old tutorial to install xvba xbmc. It was in the section on enabling the splash screen because the steps in this tutorial didn't seem to work. I got no splash screen at all. I am currently working but I will undo those changes and report back.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-04-24

adding splash quiet is enough.

the other options break it hard.

And no need to "think" further: if you disable a gpu driver (nomodeset) and wonder why there is no driver loaded - then there is not really anything to wonder about.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - bootdisk - 2014-04-24

I just upgraded My Ubuntu install to 14.04 and now dont know what happend.

Atm i have VMware/mesa GL drivers installed. My desktop is terrible laggy and when Im starting xbmc it lags alot and sometimes The picture is really weird. Have not tryed any movies/tv shows yet.

And if i remeber correct i should not use fglxr (?) drivers but i cant remeber what other drivers to use?

And vdpauinfo do not working either. Gives me an error that some file is missing.

Maybe Im posting in wrong thread now. I hope anyone of you guys can help me with this or should i reinstall 13.10?
Whats The diffrent between The desktop ISO and minimal ISO?

Bootdisk

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-04-24

Follow the howto. This is no general "I broke my Ubuntu" - thread.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - bootdisk - 2014-04-24

I know. But The Damn dist-upgrade messed things up. But i guess i have to go back to 13.10.

Another question. Is vdpauinfo or what its called compatible with ati Radeon gfx cards? I was googling abit and Saw that it was only for intel?

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-04-24

Did you even(!) take the time to read the first post? No you didn't.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - bootdisk - 2014-04-24

Yes i have several times. But okey. Im stupid. Thanks for a good howto. Worked perfect when i had 13.10 but after The upgrade something happend.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-04-24

Use xbmcbuntu v13 or OpenELEC - that will do everything out of the box for you. This howto assumes basic knowledge of linux, as is written in the very first line.

AW: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - Jan0sh - 2014-04-24

Quicky: today I found /var/log/xbmc.log to be 436 MB (!) Big. Containing a total of 7465031 lines.
Mostly " Radeon: The kernel rejected CS, see dmesg for more information."

A
"sudo uniq /var/log/upstart/xbmc.log | pastebinit"
May be found here http://paste.ubuntu.com/7324662/

As there may be a reboot between thos loglines i will attach dmesg and dmesg.0 files here:
"cat /var/log/dmesg.0 /var/log/dmesg | pastebinit"
http://paste.ubuntu.com/7324690

A regular log looks like this:
"sudo zcat /var/log/upstart/xbmc.log.1.gz | pastebinit"
http://paste.ubuntu.com/7324709/

Any hints?

Green Lines, Noise on stop - Endeavour79 - 2014-04-25

@fritsch/wsnipex

I noticed a problem with (I guess) the driver for AMD cards.
Whenever I stop play or payback finishes XBMC doesn't crash anymore but I can notice a lot of green lines and noise/distortion on the screen. Looks a bit like the symptom when the GPU/CPU overheats and crashes.
I did notice high load of the XBMC process (above 60%) when this happens and also quite hight temps, both GPU and CPU at around 80deg Celsius just sitting in the menu. Normally they are between 60-70.
As soon as I navigate the root menu as example from movies to shutdown the green lines mostly disappear and CPU load goes back to below 10%.

I'm running the setup as described in the howto (Option 1a for XBMC repo).
Happy to run some tests if you want me to.
Hardware is Zotac AD12+.

Cheers, End

@jan0sh: xbmc seems to crash, lets see a Debug Log.
@Endeavour79: did you maybe upgrade saucy to trusty? if yes, make sure that all mesa packages are the correct trusty version and try with a clean xbmc user profile.

Turn on debug logging, we need to know what is going on within xbmc when that happens so provide a debug log when the cpu load runs that high, also provide the logs from the first post.

Hi,

after upgrade to ubuntu 14.04 I am facing everyday crashes of xbmc (Gotham beta4 from team-xbmc repository). My setup is according to howto guide of this thread with one exception,

Adjust Refreshrate to match video: Off

I also cleaned mesa installation from saucy and added wsnipex mesa repository, upgraded kernel to 3.13.5, but nothing changed. Can someone help me to solve the problem?

Thanks
M
