Ok, so I am currently considering getting the D54250WYKH, but I am just not sure about the fan and 24/7 operation. Does anyone have that model and had it pretty much running 24/7 for a few month? How does it go? How noisy does the unit really get under prolonged load?

Buy the zotac ci when they become available ..
They are haswell nuc based, fanless with ir ...

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what Linux flavour and/or setup/workarounds to use if I want Frodo on my new D34010WYK3?
It works fine on Gotham but a couple of key addons are still stuck at Frodo so would like to have that option in a dualboot. It's driving me around the bend, I've tried Xubuntu 14.04 + XBMC 12.3 and XBMCbuntu 12.2 but they both have audio issues. As recommended earlier in this thread, I've tried purging the pulseaudio but that doesn't make much difference. The BIOs is fully up to date too.
Most frustratingly, the available Audio Output devices in XBMC keep changing on each reboot. "HDA Intel OEM 19W_LCD_TV on HDMI" is what works, but then without making any configuration changes it's disappeared for the next reboot and the other options just give silence and I want to Hulk out. A random number of reboots later and it's back.
Any clues would be very much appreciated.

When you reboot, is your television on? Sometimes, with audio over HDMI, if there isn't a response to the initial handshake as the host boots, it won't send audio out the correct interface.

i have that working as mini server. It was quite loaded so fan was constantly spining with 5k and it is noisy.
That is why i ended up buying fanless cover for it and now everything is ok

Has anyone had issues with strange yellowing of the desktop colors or netflix issues with Windows 7? I replaced an existing htpc with a D34010WYK and for some reason the colors on the desktop are really yellow and netflix goes light/dark/light/etc all the time which makes it unwatchable. I've never had an issue before so I know all of the cables, etc. connecting my nuc to the TV are fine.
Oddly enough XBMC full screen looks great, just like it did with the old pc and all of the videos play perfectly. Is it possible I need a new 'driver' or something for my TV? All of the nuc drivers and bios have been updated to the most recent.

I was able to fix this just in case anyone else has this problem. I only have component cables running through my wall to my HDTV so I use a HDMI -> Component converter (http://www.kanexpro.com/item/?id=HDRGBRL). The graphics were terrible until I adjusted the overscan all the way down on the HD4400 control panel. Once I did that the colors were perfect and videos play back just fine.

Thanks for the info. The active cooling is what makes me rethink my choice at the moment.

Guys, what's the best way to connect several drives to these NUC devices? I have 5 drives (1ssd for htpc OS + 4 data drives).

Get a NAS is probably the best way. Alternatively to that - USB3 hub?

4 bay NAS + NUC (with the ssd installed) = $$$$$$$ way too expensive.
Do you know of any 4 bay USB hubs?EDIT: Looking around, two 2-bay usb sata hubs may be the cheapest working solution. So nice that some NUC's come with plenty of USB ports.

I thought I'd throw this in here just in case it might help somebody else. When I replaced my old HTPC with ATI graphics with this NUC I lost the ability to view content at 24hz. From the 'old' XBMC log:

On the NUC however these are the only 1080 supported modes:

Because of this 24p content (blurays) had that pesky jutter problem. I added a custom resolution (1920x1080x24HZx32bit) to the intel control center and the video playback was very smooth but there were strange black lines all over the place making everything unwatchable.
To fix this I just unplugged the mini-HDMI connection and used the minidisplay port -> HDMI instead. I'm not sure why this worked but it sure did. I'm running Gotham 13.1 on Windows 7 64-bit with all of the latest intel drivers/bios.

I only have a D34010WYK so I'm not really sure about that. This was definitely an issue with this NUC though since I just swapped out the HTPCs, didn't change anything else, and the 24p option disappeared. Maybe in future bios/driver updates they'll fix this but for now the minidisplay port instead of mini hdmi with custom resolution added works for me.
