my raspbmc hangs without a reason... - alexxx - 2014-04-02

I am completely without a clue...

my raspbmc hangs very often, and I'm unable to understand the reason.

My setup: I have a powered USB hub where I attach my devices (external HD, wifi, remote sensor) so I dont believe it to be a power-related issue.
I video out to a Toshiba TDP-T45U projector.

When it hangs I got a completely black screen, that I cannot exit without hard rebooting. Sometimes (I didnt always detect it) before hanging it issued an "unsafe device removal" - needless to say, I didnt remove anything.

Anyway, to be sure, I switched HD with my newer backup HD, but the problem remained.

I read in another thread that it could be related to CEC, so I played with the options - I guess I set many to ignore but I dont remember exactly, since at the end I disabled it altogether.

Does any of this makes sense to you?

alessandro

In the post below, one guy claimed it was due to his USB WiFi device being plugged to to the USB hub.

"Unsafe device removal" warning usually points to power issues. Power does not need to drop completelely, just to 4.75V theshold. This can be (for example) due to thin lead wires, or internal voltage drops if you have one of the older Pis with Polyfuses.
Worth trying a good quality tablet or phone charger (>1A capacity) if you have one available.

thank you all for your help.
Having excluded all the rest, I re-installed raspbmc on a new SD card, and now it works perfectly.
I'm a bit surprised, I read about SDcards corruption but I expected them to fail utterly and completely, mine card suffered instead some kind of slow death
