Random hangs on Atom+ION - Hoober - 2014-11-19
Hi all.
I've installed OpenElec 4.2.1 with XBMC 13.2 on an Atom based mini-pc. The installation was successful and I'm able to use XBMC (including installing addons or watching videos). The problems is that after a random amount of time (between 5-10 minutes or more) XBMC hangs, or so I think: the screen goes blank, it doesn't do anything if I use the keyboard or mouse and if a movie is playing it stops too. I'm still able to log-in into the machine via SSH when it's crashed.
The hang happens while using XBMC but not in any specific menu or operation, it could be anywhere. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to forums.
Fantastic first post btw.
Nice rack of logs, useless as it turns out because server you used sprunge is overloaded and at the time Im trying to load the logs, its a no go. Not your fault either.
Now for a blind guess.
Use default skin and rename the addons folder, so you essentially have none.
If that keeps happening with this default setup, grab a few more logs into pastebin this time.
If not then you know its either the skin or addons causing this.

I could load them.
Kernel seems to have an issue with the audio device (last entry) and Audio Engine therefore cannot add packages anymore.
Can you retry with a openelec 5 beta 3? And post the same logfiles?

After doing more testing I realized what was going on: the GPU temperature was skyrocketing to more than 100ºC! It seems that around 105-110ºC the GPU would disconnect and that's why the PC was still active but no video/sound was available.
I've been able to solve the problem (at least for now) by opening the PC, cleaning the vents and applying new thermal paste. Now the GPU gets hot (around 70-80 ºC) but not to extreme levels. I've been using the system for some days and it seems stable, playing 1080p video files without problems.

Another user had the exact same problem with also an ION-1.
