signed up for beta testing of Shomi the Canadian net flicks .. Not much choice well under 200 titles vs net flicks 2000 plus .. Is this only because it is in beta phase ??

Looks like the cable people in Canada are mounting a challenge to Netflix.ca, good luck to them. Potentially they might have the contacts and pressure points to mount a good effort. But I suspect that this is the cable giants keeping their feet wet in all venues, knowing that most knowledgeable gate keepers are recognizing that viewing habits are changing and the standard cable model is not working.
Their offerings will improve, but I'd put my money on Netflix
