Pulse Eight usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - anarchoi - 2014-11-21

I bought an usb-cec hdmi adapter from Pulse-Eight when it came out, but i ended up never using it.

Today i connected it to my HTPC but it isn't detected by XBMC. When i go to system->devices it isn't listed in the periphericals list as it should.

My setup is:
- HTPC
- i use "gefen hdmi detective" between HTPC and AVR to solve handshake issues.
- Denon AVR-3313
- Panasonic VT60
- Cogeco cable box (motorola?)

I want to be able to control XBMC with my cable box or TV remote.

I don't know what else to do, i can't find any information or manual and the pulse-eight forum is offline.

If you give up with the cec adapter, look at https://flirc.tv/

How exactly have you plugged it in?

RE: usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - Prof Yaffle - 2014-11-21

Yeah, give us some more information - I have two of these, and they work fine for me between my HTPCs and my TVs...

What OS? Platform? Versions? Firmware? ...

Quote:How exactly have you plugged it in?
htpc -> hdmi cable -> cec adapter -> dvr -> tv

Quote:What OS? Platform? Versions? Firmware? ...
Windows 8.1

I use the default version/firmware

The gefen doesn't appear in that diagram. It may be the problem. Try without it.

Also the USB connection to the computer is not shown, I assume it is plugged in?

Does the DVR support cec? Tried by passing that and going from cec adapter to TV? Also update the firmware, there is a tool for it on the pylse8 site, latest version is v4 from memory. Does the adapter show up in windows device manager? Also have you plugged in the USB cable?

Oops sorry forgot to add it.

htpc -> hdmi cable -> cec adapter -> hdmi -> gefen -> hdmi -> dvr -> tv

I can't try without the Gefen or else i will have handshake issues on my HTPC and i won't even be able to get a display on my TV

Yep, correctly plugged

I'm pretty sure the receiver support CEC, it is a $1500 high-end receiver and it was bought less than 2 years ago.

I can't find any tools to upgrade the firmware, but i would a driver on Pulse8 website and it seems that the adapter was detected during installation
BUT it still doesn't appear in XBMC devices list and i can't find it in Windows device manager, unless it uses a generic device name

Not the avr, the dvr - try with that out of the loop. Firmware is here http://packages.pulse-eight.net/windows/

Sorry it was a typo, i have an AVR not a DVR

And as for the firmware update:

Tried different USB ports, same result

RE: usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - teeedubb - 2014-11-25

Try a different USB cable and make sure the driver is installed correctly.

RE: usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - anarchoi - 2014-11-25

was about to post that, i just tried another USB cable from my playstation and it still doesn't work Sad

I also reinstalled the driver

LibCEC also doesn't detect the adapter http://gyazo.com/a695ad2e6f865a73274651f40607d568

RE: usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - teeedubb - 2014-11-26

If you're sure the driver has installed correctly you may have gotten a dud - get in touch with pulse8 or where you got it from.

Or try openelec from a USB drive to see if it works with Linux.

RE: usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - anarchoi - 2014-11-26

I bought it like 1 year ago and never used it until today because i had a different setup. I'm pretty sure it is out of warranty.

I also had a nightmare with their other products, i bought 2 nyxboard hybrid and they ALL had problems that could never be fixed. Even the replacement remotes had problems. Pulse Eight had tons of users having the same problems on their forums before they shut them down.
Not sure if i want to risk dealing with them again. That sucks because i liked the idea of being able to control my HTPC without direct line of sight (through my TV remote aiming at the TV instead).
And i've been looking forever for a RF HTPC remote that can also control the TV with an "universal remote side". Nyxboard was the perfect solution. It sucks that Pulse8 have so many problems with their products.

RE: Pulse Eight usb-cec hdmi adapter HELP - anarchoi - 2014-11-26

It's weird because when i install the driver manually with the package downloaded from Pulse-Eight, windows DOES detect the usb-cec device.

See screenshot here (sorry windows is in french)

It says "ready to use"
