USB AC3 SPDIF Passthrough Problem - rwom - 2014-11-28

Dug around and couldn't find the answer. I'm using the latest raspbmc image from the rpi site.

I have a Behringer UCA 202 USB audio adapter connected. I want AC3/DTS passthrough the SPDIF to my receiver.

In the audio config, selected ALSA/SPDIF for both audio and passthrough device, enabled passthrough, and enabled ac3/dts.

Result is that I hear the XBMC menu clicks and sounds correctly via SPDIF, but when playing back video there is no sound output at all.

Am I missing some configuration somewhere?

Thanks.

Usb audio is not supported by omxplayer. Either use context menu and "play using dvdplayer" or change the default video player to dvdplayer in advancedsettings.xml
http://kodi.wiki/view/Advancedsettings.xml

Note that with latest Kodi version (Helix) the media player will switch automatically. Currently in beta, but very close to release.
You could try a test build with this. E.g.

Ah. Thanks for the rapid response.

Any downside to using dvdplayer - does it still support hw decode?

I will also give Helix a try.

Thanks!

dvdplayer uses hardware decode, but the player logic runs on the arm.
omxplayer uses hardware decode, and the player logic runs on the gpu.

This means omxplayer is a little more efficient. dvdplayer should handle moderate bitrate 1080p video fine. You may need omxplayer for raw Blu-Ray images.

dvdplayer has been made a lot more efficient in Helix (both in memory and cpu), so moving to Helix is recommended.

Seems to be. Was up earlier today. Expect it will be back before long.

http://openelec.tv is back now (for now).

Ok, so I installed the latest openelec beta (4.95.5).

Now, when I enable SPDIF passthrough there is a signal on the output, but it's just noise. I think I might be running into the problem here http://www.ac3filter.net/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=5e955aaf30004895f724cf06890df3b4&topic=10.msg351#msg351 where the UCA202 needs the L and R streams reversed to correctly pass through AC3/DTS. I assume there is no easy way to do that in Kodi.

What would you recommend for a cheap USB/SPDIF adapter that'll work with Kodi/RPI ?

Thanks for the help.

I would imagine a hdmi splitter (e.g. like this) would have the least limitations (i.e. you can still use omxplayer or dvdplayer).

Otherwise the HifiBerry Digi (or Digi+ if you have a B+) is quite popular.

Since I'm CPU constrained... assume HDMI passthrough would be less overhead than USB/SPDIF ?

I ordered a turtle beach USB s card, but will return it and get the HDMI splitter if that's the case...

Thanks.

Yes, passthrough over HDMI is the lowest CPU option.

RE: USB AC3 SPDIF Passthrough Problem - rwom - 2014-12-15

Just to update this....

Using an HDMI audio splitter is working well - I can now stream 1080p bluray streams from SMB shares over my wired network with DTS/AC3 passthrough. Running the latest RC build.

Thanks for the help, and thanks to the team for the hard work.

Out of interest did the Turtle Beach USB II work at all ?

And which HDMI Audio splitter did you use ?

Sorry, I didn't open the TB USB - it's going back, so I don't know.

I used this splitter.
