[split] [RELEASE] Yahoo! Weather - mentat - 2015-01-01

Greetings roni and thanks for the great weather service!

I' running a clean install of Kodi 14.0 on my RPi (OpeneELEC 5.0.0) and noticed the following (when running Yanhoo! Weather 3.0.4):

A "red square" appears (under the AM/PM indicator of the time display) for about a second then disappears again.

I noticed this, as I usually leave weather running (when not watching something)... it takes a few minutes to start, but when it does, the "blinking red square" will then continue to display (at random intervals).

I did search the entire forum and could not find any simiar results and I thought I should mention it here (as it only appears in the weather display).

Thanks.

I had to watch the weather for almost 20 minutes, before it showed up again, but here it is...

RE: [RELEASE] Yahoo! Weather - ronie - 2015-01-02

i don't recognize it, i've never seen that square before.

i've checked the confluence code and can't find a hint of it there.

hopefully someone else recognizes it and may tell you where it's coming from.

Strange "red square" appears on HDMI display (OpeneELEC 5.0.0) - mentat - 2015-01-02

Greetings and Happy New Year!

I've been using the same Raspberry Pi (Model B) with OpenELEC (since 3.2.4), uprading to each new stable release and I've never seen this behaviour until my recent upgrade (to 5.0.0) and I also tested for this behaviour on a clean install (on a new SD card).

Basically, when I'm not watching anything, I leave the display on ronie's Yahoo! Weather service and after several mintues (random), a "red square" appears on display, disappears, then re-appears (at random intervals).

I reported this on the "[RELEASE] Yahoo! Weather" thread, but ronie has never seen it and suggested that someone else may have, so I'm posting here.

Please have a look at this post (screenshots are included) and let me know if you've seen this, what it is, and how to make it stop.

Please note, that I am using the Model B (not the newer Model B+) Rasperry Pi

Thanks.

RE: Strange "red square" appears on HDMI display (OpeneELEC 5.0.0) - popcornmix - 2015-01-02

It's an over-temperature warning (See here).

It's not a big issue, but it means overclock will be disabled until temperature returns below 85'C.

This is actually very rare. Can you describe your environment (room temperature, if Pi is cased and has any ventilation, if Pi is on top of other hot equipment)?
Are you overclocked?

RE: [RELEASE] Yahoo! Weather - Milhouse - 2015-01-02

The red square is the overheat indicator for Raspberry Pis, most likely caused by scrolling text in the GUI.

On Model B+, a rainbow square indicates under voltage (use a better power supply).

Hi popcornmix and thanks for the reply.

I did have a look at the Under-voltage warnings topic, but it appeared to apply only to the B+ (I wasn't sure it applied to the B as well)?

The room is cool (22~25°C) and the Pi is cased and sitting on top of the TV stand (with air space around and below) and it's never hot to the touch.

I often check the hardware information page and have never see the reported temperature above 65°C (the Pi is hidden behind the center speaker).

I use Leopold's "OpenELEC RPi Configuration" service to overclock using custom settings as discussed on the "Super Turbo settings Raspberry Pi" thread (trying to choose the most conservative from the consensus in the group).

Here's a copy of the config.sys generated by Leopold's program: http://pastebin.com/xBMgVK6c

This configuration uses force_turbo=1 but I have also tested the same configuration with force_turbo=0 (and the "red square" still appears (but only in the Weather screen).

Please let me know if your require any addition information or testing.

Update: additional (related) information from Milhouse in this post: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=169410&pid=1878392#pid1878392

Hi Milhouse and thanks for the reply.

popcornmix directed me to the same Under-voltage warnings topic (link) but it (still) appears to me that it applies to the B+ (does it apply to the Model B as well) and if so should I buy a new power supply or stop overclocking?

I didn't want to hijack ronie's thread, so I started a new one in the RPi forum (with some additional information)... sorry about any confusion my cross-posting may have caused.

The overheat indicator applies to all models, the under-voltage (rainbow) indicator applies to B+ only (maybe also A+).

Overheating has nothing to do with your power supply, but you probably want to try a lower overclock if your temperatures are out of control. Though as I said before, your high temperature is most likely caused by scrolling in the GUI. It's a known issue that if the GUI is being hammered with updates then the CPU/GPU temperature goes through the roof.

Easiest solution is to not leave the Pi on a screen with constantly scrolling/updating text, or use a recent test build that includes commits which disable scrolling when the Black/Dim screensaver is enabled (either my OpenELEC test builds, or Miappa's Raspbmc builds). Then configure a fairly low screensaver interval, such as 3 minutes.

If you want to monitor your temperature from the command line, try bcmstat.sh.

OK, now I understand (the operation of the indicator and the meaning of your previous post regarding scrolling/updating text the GUI).

I usually use your OpenELEC test builds, but wanted to try the recently released "stable" build (and stay on Kodi 14 for a while).

I will take your advice and start using your script to monitor my temperature.

Thanks (again) for all the information, advice and clarification.

RE: [RELEASE] Yahoo! Weather - Milhouse - 2015-01-03

FYI the script is included as standard in my builds (/usr/bin/bcmstat.sh).

Solution: the strange "red square" is the over-temperature warning symbol (indicator) as documented in the Raspberry Pi Forum topic:

Confirming the bloody annoying and resource hungry RSS feed is also disabled by default on Helix releases for the RPi ?
