Input for Shield Mid Year review - Pick the Right Kodi Box thread

I'm about to update the above Hardware thread and need honest, detailed brief input about what works on the Shield and what is currently broken.
No fanboy extensive walls of text, I want clear concise info, such as:

- Firmware 3.2 update has broken 25/50fps deinterlacing on the Shield

So current questions for the update (Kodi Jarvis SPMC only):

1) is 23.976/29.97/59.94fps video sync working properly, are there stutters with 4K content ?
2) is Kodi dynamic 23.976/29.97.59.94fps refresh rate switching working properly ?
3) does the Shield autoswitch 720p/1080p<<--->> 2160p resolutions properly ?
4) quality of the video upscaling ?
5) status of HDR10 or regular 10bit Kodi video output ?
6) status of HDR10 Netflix video output ?
7) any major issues with HD Audio passthrough ?
8) worthy new OS features compared to regular Android devices ?
9) any other major annoying (common) issues ?

Thx.
W.

Quick question - what is the best way to deal with constant buffering issues when streaming through kodi, using Nvidia shield? I constantly get the messages when trying to stream HD feeds. Are there shield specific settings that should be tweaked?

Where are you getting the streams from?

1) All of them are working properly. I have not noticed any stutter with 4K or 1080p.
2) Refresh rate switching works fine if AVR and display are both HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 compliant. It doesn't work if the AVR is HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 and the display is HDMI/HDCP 1.4. This is a known issue and will be resolved in an upcoming update.
3) No, it will not autoswitch resolutions. I think this is more of a limitation with Android OS.
4) Upscaling quality can see improvement.
5) HDR10 works with Kodi and SPMC. HDR10 is active only @ 4K 40/59.94/60Hz.
6) No issues with Netflix HDR10.
7) Some Onkyo sound systems and lower-end Denon AVRs seem to have issues with HD audio passthrough. Users report that it seems to work OK with Kodi 17 alpha.
8) These are not OS features, but are features exclusive to Shield at this time: YouTube 4K 60fps, VUDU 4K with Dolby Atmos, Plex Media Server
9) I am not aware of any annoying issue.

7.a. Any issues with HD Audio Decode to HD Multichannel PCM?
9. Any issues with bit perfect audio output (44.1, 88.2, 176.4, 192 KHz) for music lovers? FLAC, SACD and DVDA ISO.

Ok carrying those questions forward...

Thanks wesk05, good concise info. Smile

3) Just for info here. Android Lollipop on AML S8xx/S9xx devices switches resolutions and refresh rates for 720/1080p <---> 2160p Automatically, but it has a 1/4 screen display issue when doing so. I've also fixed the video upscaling 1/4 screen issue when using versions OpenELEC / LibreELEC Kodi.

4) More info pls. Do you mean the Shield needs better quality upscaling ?

3) I based my answer on what @Koying and others have been saying. I think native Android doesn't have resolution switching abilities, but if you hack it you can get it.
4) Yes, hardware based upscaling can be improved. I think @Koying has added some advanced HQ scalers in SPMC. I will have to check on that.

I forgot to mention this:
9) On 3.2 update, refresh rate switching defaults to RGB. It overrides the color space setting (YCbCr, RGB).

Regarding @Bill4's comment about bit perfect audio output. You can get bit perfect output for 44.1, 96 and 192kHz with players that use the native audio player. It just doesn't work in Kodi/SPMC. I am not sure that you can get bit perfect output for 88.2 and 176.4kHz from Kodi on any OS.

Actually, as of Android M, the api is there. Amazon has backported it to their FireOS and @MrMC confirmed it's working on AFTV4K (I tested it between 720p and 1080p on AFTV1, for fun).
Unfortunately, it's borked in Shield firmware, so not working.

Hmm, so what this mean for deep color and ultra wide color gamut support with HDR?

Interesting... Do you know whether it works on the Nexus Player? MrMC can now switch to 4K on AFTV4K?

HDR is active only for 4K 50/59.94/60Hz. Those modes will always default to 10-bit Rec. 2020 YCbCr 4:2:0 (provided the display has support). It will switch to 4K 23.976 RGB and then back to YCbCr.

I can't believe that Amazon devs got it right and Nvidia devs screwed it up Smile What are they doing over there ?

Yes. 4K and any resolution/refresh rate that we get from the display mode API can be used as gui and/or video playback.

Here's from my Samsung UHDTV.

The 24 is really 23.976 and 60 is really 59.94. Need to check 30 sometime.

RE: NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box) - wrxtasy - 2016-07-18

Speaking of 4K on AFTV2, is there any 8/10bit HEVC Hardware decoding to go along with the 2160p output ?

You will have to check the output of AFTV4K with an HDMI analyzer to verify whether the output is actually 23.976Hz or not. I know that 60Hz is actually 59.940Hz and 24Hz from the hidden menu is not 23.976Hz on the AFTV4K.
