RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2018-03-13 O (2018-03-13, 14:57)mkohman Wrote: Sorry to have started an argument between the two of you but I would like to confirm that I have received my Sapphire RX560 4GB and its working like a charm.. No hick ups whatsoever and running on the highest settings of MadVR as shown in pictures below (JAVS Settings from AVS Forums) .. Thanks for your help guys [emoji106]You have some questionable settings and some apparent settings confusion based on those posted screenshots. For starters, there is no way your card can do NGU very high luma doubling. You would need a 1080 Ti for that. And even that might choke. With your card, NGU low or medium would be appropriate. Set everything else to "let madVR decide." Then you will use madshi's preferred settings for each upscaling scenario. This is like using expert settings. He knows what he is doing, so "let madVR decide." Otherwise, you may waste resources on settings that do very little to improve image quality. If you are not upscaling a video (such as a 4k UHD rip shown at 4K UHD), then image upscaling won't activate as it is unnecessary. The only required scaling is chroma upscaling to alter the chroma subsampling applied to the source. Try a 1080p rip scaled to 2160p. Despite common belief, 1080p rips are more demanding than 720p rips when scaling to 4K. That is a true stress test. I bet you won't be able to go beyond NGU medium luma doubling. Again, always worry about luma doubling and set everything else to "let madVR decide." High quality luma scaling is what makes madVR's image upscaling special. Chroma is a waste or overkill to most human eyes. The chroma layer is simply too soft and lacks detail. Luma, luma, luma. When upscaling, it can be helpful to make profiles for each resolution and resolutions combined with the source frame rate. Each resolution and frame rate combination will require different settings if you are maximizing your graphics card. As stated, every source presents a different load on the GPU. So you want profiles to adjust for each scenario. I highly recommend you read the set-up guide below. I wrote it. It has not been updated for any new features, but everything else is up to date. I am missing custom refresh rates, reduce compression artifacts and reduce random noise. Turn off reduce ringing artifacts, reduce compression artifacts and reduce random noise unless you are watching torrented TV shows. Blu-ray rips or files over 10 GB shouldn't have these problems. So there is no need to destroy the image. Debanding is another story. Many 1080p Blu-rays have some banding. And debanding is not very destructive. I recommend it for any profile below 4K. You should only alter the source in subtle ways if it is high quality to begin with. NGU chroma/luma and you are good to go in most scenarios. madVR Set up Guide (for Kodi DSPlayer and Media Player Classic) RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2018-03-13 As for the Nvidia vs. AMD debate. Give it a rest already. Both will do the job in almost identical fashion. The differences are not important to the vast majority of users. Both will do NGU chroma/luma upscaling and HDR passthrough, which is what 90% of users come to madVR for in the first place: NGU upscaling and HDR support. The only caveat I would make is AMD needs 10-bit output for HDR passthrough. Nvidia does not. Some displays (even 10-bit ones) hate 10-bit output and are much better with 8-bit. 8-bit with madVR's dithering is so close to 10-bit I don't think most users would notice the difference on grayscale test patterns. Bit depth is really overrated unless your TV hates 10-bit output. In which case, you would want a Nvidia card. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Bibio - 2018-03-13 (2018-03-13, 16:53)brazen1 Wrote: I notice you have 'send HDR metadata to the display' Off. How are you playing an HDR title? It should look faded with it off like that instead of bright with lots of color. Are you testing high quality 1:1 files with at least 109 mbps bit rate as well as low end titles like 720's that start making high demand on the GPU? What about 4k 60Hz playback? How about frame packed 3D? If you can play assortment of well rounded title selections, this sounds promising.yup what he said.. if you dont include the hdr metadata switch then you wont turn on the hdr. i could be wrong but if you dont add the required frame rates in madvr field then you will only run at 60hz for all files instead of the required 23, 24, 50, 60. ''List all display modes madVR may switch to: 2160p60, 2160p24, 2160p23, 1080p24, 1080p23, so on and so on. the above insures that madvr will switch to the correct frame rates for the file being played, if you dont you will just play at the default rate of 60hz. make sure that you tv, monitor or projector can play the rates. i have to stick to 60hz on my monitor as thats the only rate it does but my tv does them all. while playing a movie press ctrl+j on your keyboard and it will pop a side panel up to show you the information of the file being played. Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mkohman - 2018-03-13 Thank you so much.. So which formats shall I add please? Its only 4k and bluray nothing less is watched or played on the htpc.. Thank you.. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2018-03-14 (2018-03-13, 23:47)mkohman Wrote: Thank you so much.. So which formats shall I add please? RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mkohman - 2018-03-14 Wow.. I completely missed your two previous posts.. Apologies.. I'll go read them now.. Thank you [emoji106] RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Bibio - 2018-03-14 warner's guide rocks :-) if you press the ctrl+j it will give you the rate of the movie being played somewhere around the middle of the pop up panel. play a few movies including 4k and write them down. i would say its a safe bet to use 2160p60, 2160p24, 2160p23, 1080p24, 1080p23 if only playing 4k and 1080p. check your GPU hardware tab for compatible sizes and rates that your card and connected tv, monitor or projector can use. start->settings->system->display adaptor properties (at bottom)->list all modes. this will give you a list of the refresh rates and aspect ratios you can change to. if its not on the list you cant use it. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - brazen1 - 2018-03-14 Hi Warner306. Using 4k on a 4k display: Would it be correct to assume, since there is nothing to scale up for UHD, LUMA becomes null and void? To avoid needless processing power altogether for LUMA and concentrate on CHROMA instead? So, for UHD only (and why it's advisable to use separate profiles for processing and resolution) When using anything less than UHD, do exactly the opposite and concentrate on LUMA 1st and then any resources left apply to CHROMA since it will scaling up IE 1080p. Would you agree with this? Really appreciate your input beyond your guide and TIA. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mclingo - 2018-03-14 the reason display modes arent used in my baic guide is that there is a bug with madvr coming stopping a movie coming out of 1080p 3D playback back onto a 2160p gui or desktop where you can either get HDMI loss or a crashed machine. I've documented this and logged it as a bug, This happens mainly with AMD cards but I also had it with my 1050 as well but that card wasnt in my rig long enough to thoroughly test. To get around this you have to use refresh rate switching in KODI DS instead, or whichever media player you are using. Obviously the the problem with this is that you wont be able to use CRU's which are essential for NVIDIA cards, therefore this workaround is only for 3D users for AMD cards. Using this method you'll get the correct settings show in CONTROL J as you would do using MADVR display modes, when this get fixed i'll drop back to using MADVR but the bug hasnt even been acknowledged by MADSHI yet so i'm not holding my breath. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2018-03-14 (2018-03-14, 00:17)brazen1 Wrote: Hi Warner306.At UHD -> UHD, the image upscaling setting is ignored. There is no upscaling, so no need to use it. Set it to Jinc + AR in case some pixels are missing. But this shouldn't be the case. So you are left with chroma upscaling because the video source is chroma subsampled (at 4:2:0). This means you have to upscale the chroma (with chroma upscaling) to match the luma layer (4:2:0 -> 4:4:4) before output. madVR can't do miracles, as chroma subsampling actually works pretty good. Even crappy upscalers don't look that bad. You could add some sharpening from image enhancements. But I don't recommend this anymore. It just makes the image look artificial. But some may like the extra pop that comes with sharpen edges or crispin edges. Chroma upscaling and you are done. Maybe some debanding. For sources that need to be upscaled, use any of the three NGU variants under image upscaling. All are great. Personally, I prefer NGU Sharp. Select the luma quality (the black and white detail layer) and let madVR decide the rest (when to enable; the color layer, etc.). After luma doubling, the rest is less important and madshi has many presets (let madVR decide) that keep users from making settings errors. You can overwhelm any graphics card by setting everything to the highest setting. But the image might not look any better. This includes overdoing the separate chroma upscaling setting. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mkohman - 2018-03-14 @Warner360 here are some pics of the settings.. I hope it's OK.. If anything needs changing I would appreciate if you could please let me know.. Thanks.. It is set to doubling very high.. Pictures are rubbish as cheap phone camera.. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mclingo - 2018-03-14 hi, if you press F5 while watching a movie you can take a screen shot, make sure you untick "dont draw OSD" or you wont capture your CONTROL J settings. here is an example, ignore the values, this is an older shot. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0gdi4kmb0nlcb36/Star%20Wars%20Episode%201%20The%20Phantome%20Menace%20%281999%29.mkv_snapshot_00.32.31_%5B2018.03.09_21.38.57%5D.jpg?dl=0 RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Bibio - 2018-03-14 your at the correct frame rate and no dropped frames etc.etc so i would say your good to go, well done :-) now try with 4k hdr and see how it goes. i'll be interested to see if you get any 'exit bugs' while dropping back to the desktop resolution. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mkohman - 2018-03-14 Thanks but unfortunately I have one of the little logitech keyboards in the theatre so not sure how to f5 as there are no keys.. I changed it to ngu Sharp and high still no frame drops... Here's a pic.. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mkohman - 2018-03-14 Thank you. My projector isn't 4K..Still waiting delivery of my JVC x5900.. I currently have a Sony hw40es which is a 1080p when I play a 4K movie now.. Its all choppy and the colour is completely off.. Think that's because it ain't a 4K projector and maybe the cable isn't up for it as its 1.4 rather than 2.0b cable |
