RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - markm75 - 2019-03-02

I've had things going well on my HTPC + Kodi Dsplayer for some time, however, suddenly an issue i cant figure out.  Not sure if its Dsplayer related or not, i suspect it likely is so posting here for now.  Often whether its a 4k movie or a tv show at 1080p ill go to play the content and the tv goes black, usually no audio on the receiver.  If i switch to windowed mode i can then get audio to play (ie: it might switch to dts) and i can see the playback, switch back to full screen and it goes black.

To fix this i have to reboot.. havent found a workaround.  Has anyone ran into this?  Using a 1080 gtx video card in this case.
Edit: possibly related though unsure.. it looks like im getting a second denon showing up in sound settings, i think it might be flipping back and forth causing an issue, not sure why a second is there.
Thanks

Hey Guys,

I finally managed to get my Windows 10 Desktop to fill my 2.39:1 screen perfectly with a resolution of 3840 x 1620. This resolution needed to be added to the AMD registry within "regedit" in Windows. I have had to add a line in the binary code of a file named "DALNonStandardModesBCD1".

Here is an image of how it looks now (the highlighted line is what I had to add).. you have to restart the PC then select it in the display resolutions once back up and running:

Image

Image

I now have my screen resolution for my desktop set to 3840 x 1620 which looks perfect on my scope screen, I have an issue with Kodi.

So if I set Kodi resolution as 3840 x 2160p then I have no issues, everything plays correctly at correct resolution and refresh rate, however the GUI of Kodi is 16:9 format within the 2.39:1 screen.

If I want the Kodi GUI to also be scope screen like this:

Image

I need to select the Kodi resolution to 3840 x 1620 like the desktop resolution but I would need to also enable "Use fullscreen window" within Kodi for the GUI to fill the screen as normal for a scope screen effect like the picture above.

When I do this and start playing a movie, Kodi seems to be downscaling a 3840 x 2160p (4K) movie to the new resolution of 3840 x 1620 and the video is not smooth, it is a bit jittery..

Is there a way I could select the Kodi GUI to be scope screen like my desktop at 3840 x 1620 but have my player resolution to only be at 3840 x 2160p so it doesn't try to downscale at all?

I am not sure if any of this is making sense and apologise to post it in this thread but I thought this may be relevant as we all have projectors here and there may be some people who are experiencing the same issues or may know how to resolve this issue. Thank you again ..

By the way I am using Kodi DSPlayer with madVR as my video player if that helps answer the above or if that would make any difference.. Thanks

@Warner306 I am hoping you can help me out with this Smile

You need to experiment with the settings mentioned here (Move OSD into active video areaDefine visible screen area):

Thank you so much, I will definitely give this a go too. Someone on AVS advised to put 2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p30 in madVR refresh options in the setting and said that as my new desktop resolution is 3840 x 2160p 60 hz, it may force madVR to play 4K 24hz movies at the usual aspect ration of 3840 x 2160p? I will try that as well as your recommended method.

Do you by any chance have a scope screen and have you ever tried the method you mentioned? Thanks for all your help!

I don’t have a scope screen, but aracnoz added these settings for this specific purpose: To resize the player OSD and/or the entire Kodi GUI.

I will try and explain this the best I can in order to avoid any kind of confusion....

I have a JVC projector and a HTPC, my screen is 2.39:1 format (135"). I only ever really watch 2.39 or 2.4 content on my setup and don't really care about 16:9 movies for the projector as I watch them on my 4K TV.

I use madVR with my HTPC along with my GPU Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 4GB. I use madVR for tone mapping HDR also.

I overshoot my projector so that the top and bottom is overshooting the screen which leaves me a perfect fit for a 2.39 movie. In doing so, my Windows 10 HTPC desktop which was previously set to 3840 x 2160p 60hz (8bit) was overshooting my screen and I wanted to be able to view my entire desktop within my 2.39:1 screen. In order to do this I have searched the internet and asked on the forums how I can do this. I came across a YouTube video where I was guided to edit a registry file within "regedit" and put a custom resolution of 3840 x 1620p at 60hz which I have done and the result can be seen below:

Image

After doing this regedit, I restarted my HTPC , went into the AMD software and selected 3840 x 1620p at 60hz for my desktop resolution. This was absolutely fine and I was happy with this. Here is what it looks like with this resolution on my 2.39 screen:

Image

After I did this I opened up Kodi DSPlayer. My Kodi DSPlayer GUI has always been in 16:9 format within my 2.39 screen and my screen resolution has always been 3840 x 2160p and I have had no issues. Since changing my desktop resolution to a scope format I then wanted to change the way my Kodi DSPlayer looked on my screen . I wanted the GUI to fill the whole screen instead of just 16:9 format..

In order to do this I learned by experimenting that I had to set Kodi DSPlayer's resolution to the same as my desktop (3840 x 1620p) and when I do this the screen stretches out to fill 2.39 but still doesn't look quite right, however when I enable "use fullscreen window" then the GUI sits perfectly within inside my 2.39 screen.. Please see images below:

So now the issue I was having is that my movies when played with madVR seemed to be downscaling to 3840 x 1620p and didn't play right.. it was stuttering. In order to avoid this I added screen resolutions (2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p30, 2160p50 and 2160p59) into madVR in the hope that it would force the videos to play in this format and not downscale it to 3840 x 1620p which was my desktop resolution and the resolution I had to set within madVR to get the GUI to display correctly.

In doing the above, the video plays correctly now (I think, please check the the images as the movies is 3840 x 2160 but it is showing 3840 x 1607, 2.39) please can you confirm this is OK? I think this is happening as I am using madVR black bar detection ..  Please see pics below:

Image

Image

Please note that in the above picture is says "D3D11 fullscreen windowed (8bit)" . as my movies are 4K HDR shouldn't it say 10bitHuh Please can you advise me of this. I know this is because I have enabled "use fullscreen window" but I must do this if I want the Kodi GUI to be correct format within my screen aspect ratio.

Please see pictures below, this is what it looks like if I disable the "use fullscreen window" in Kodi .. It shows as D3D11 fullscreen (10bit) which is the correct format of the movie:

Image

As I need Kodi GUI to be perfectly fit in my screen ratio, I select resolution as same as my desktop which is now 3840 x 1620p and enable "use fullscreen window" in Kodi for it to display correctly without any stretching happening.

My question really is, is there a way to get madVR to play this as a 10bit file or is it no problem if it is displays as (8bit) on the madVR OSD?

RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - mkohman - 2019-03-03

It's worth mentioning that I use the JVC masking in order to crop the top and bottom of the screen. the reason I do this is when watching movies with IMAX scenes (ie Interstellar, First Man, MI Fallout etc) I don't want the image to overshoot my screen.

Here are some of my Kodi Settings for reference to get the GUI to fill the screen:

Here is some pics of my desktop and GPU settings:

Just to re cap.. Here is what I need to know :

1 - The fact that is is showing (8bit) in the madVR OSD is this ok? If not then how can I please resolve this?

2 - Is my screen resolutions for desktop and Kodi correct and should I be enabling  "use fullscreen window"? If I don't then my Kodi GUI doesn't sit in my 2.39 correctly it looks stretched.

3 - When I view a movie with the settings above it seems to be working ok resolution wise but shows as 3840 x 2160 -> 3840 x 1607 is this ok?

4 - Once I exit the Kodi and return to my Windows Desktop, for some reason my windows desktop selects itself to 3840 x 1620p but instead of 60 hz 8 bit it changes to 24hz 12 bit? Whats the reason for this please?

Sorry for so many questions and the very long post but I really would appreciate if I can get this sorted please and guided if I am doing anything wrong.. Thank you so much and look forward to your help and advice Smile

For question 1:
For 10bits, you have to chose a color depth of 10bpc in your display and GPU settings and you also have to chose "10 bit (or higher) for the native display bitdpeth in Madvr settings: device > JVC... > properties

For your other questions, I don't know, someone else here may be able to help you...

Thank you for your reply, I have already done all this but thanks Smile The 8bit's that can be seen in one of the pictures above is for when refresh rate is @ 60 hz as you can only choose 8bit for RGB:444. I will try some other settings and see what comes of it.. Thank you.

@mkohman

now that's awesome .... but i guess you have an AMD Radeon card ? so you wouldn't know how to do that an Nvidia GTX ?

I've been looking for this for ages .....

RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - LANnerd - 2019-03-05

I did a similar setup a while back with a 1080p projector and some masking/stage/gaffer tape on the wall.
Worked perfectly, had a custom resolution made in my nvidia drivers of 1920x816 and added the resolution as the only resolution in madvr for framerate switching.

Tip, have madvr cut off the black bars from movies to get a 2.39:1 aspect ratio and stay in the custom resolution instead of switching back to 16:9 resolution with blackbars overshooting. This will cause madvr to automaticaly downscale some 16:9 scenes in those imax movies so you get a constant image height screen with added black bars on the sides when an imax scene comes along. works flawless and didn't even notice the switch in scaling.

When madvr scales to much in case of 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 movies use the "disable scaling when scaling is less lines than: x lines". and disable the "zoom small black bars away" options.

Loved that setup and wil use something like that again when i have the room for it. still can't fathom why there arent any 2.39:1 OLED tv's...

You should be able to just create a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel

Thank you Smile as richardsim7 advises you should be able to create a custom resolution in your GPU settings. Mine is 3840 x 1620

Are there no support for DVBViewer in this version?
