HEVC H.265 Video Card - gwilly7 - 2016-01-16

In my current setup I have a windows pc with an AMD A10. I am currently using this for video but notice that when I play HEVC files that my cpu fan really gets humming pretty good. Would I be better off using a separate video card for decoding these files and if so can anyone recommend a good card at a decent price. I am pretty sure I will need a low profile card to fit into my HTPC.

A low profile GTX950 is what you are looking for.

Thank you so much. I have really like using these files. The size and quality are amazing but I can tell they are making my cpu work pretty hard.

There is currently no hevc-10 bit support via hwaccel in ffmpeg, just keep that in mind.

What exactly does that mean?

I think it means that no hardware acceleration for 10 bit HEVC in Linux variants of Kodi? (Not sure about Windows and DXVA, and Android?)

I am running windows.

After doing more research, from what I can tell from an article that I read. The GTX 960 is the only one that can do full hardware decoding of HEVC files. The article I read was about 9 month old though. Is this still the case?

RE: HEVC H.265 Video Card - Display Name - 2016-01-17

The hardware that can as of now hardware decode h.265 are as follows HEVC 10bit & 8bit (Nvidia GTX 960/50, shield TV and some ARM processors) and @ only 8bit (specific Intel iGPU's, Nvidia GTX 750ti half decoder, and some other arm processors). Anyways i think Kodi does not yet use HW decoding of said hardware as of yet. we will have to wait and see when developers will be able to implement for HW decoding of H.265.

So at this time it would be pointless to purchase a video card for hardware decoding for HEVC? Is this correct?

Well really depends if you want if for only to decode H.265 then as of now it is pretty useless, but I am not sure how long it will take developers to implement the HW decoding capabilities. but for other things like gaming then no.

No just for decoding H.265 files. My cpu fan gets going pretty good after playing a few files. Was just looking to reduce the load on the cpu and quite things down a little.

Im not sure if the developer is referring to only 10Bit H.265 that is not supported or H.265 in general. I can take a look and see if it can off load when playing a 8Bit file if you have one that I can test, and see if it offloads some to the gpu (since i have a GTX 750ti only half decoder).

8 bit is supported easily
10 bit "can be made working" but officially not before v17 release. We had some experimental builds with custom ffmpeg patches (dxva hwaccel / swscale p1010 support), but this code / functionality is not in our code as of now.

Thank you so much for your help. I pulled the trigger and got a gtx 960 and my HTPC now plays HEVC files perfectly and most importantly nice and quiet.
