Mac Mini Questions - aaronb - 2008-10-07

I'll be upgrading from the original Xbox soon and I was hoping to go with a Mac Mini, but a few questions first:

1. Now that XBMC supports multi-core video decoding is the 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo Mini sufficient for 720p? I'm not worried about 1080p at all, but I want to be able play all 720p x264 videos without problems and the 1.66GHz Mini is $200 cheaper.

2. After 2 years on the Xbox I really like using the original Xbox controller to control XBMC instead of a remote (the triggers are indispensable for scrolling through long lists). Is it possible to use it on XBMC for Mac? I tried searching but could not find anything.

1. The 1.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini will play all 720p H.264 videos just fine, (but it will struggle with the majority of 1080p H.264 videos). Apple TV will also play the majority of 720p H.264 videos (though might struggle with some very high-bitrate and/or high-profile videos).

2. Not sure about the original Xbox controller, but I believe the Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers are supported (but I am not 100% sure), they might require third-party software to work properly today under Mac OS X, see:

I have Mac Mini with Core Duo 1,83 and 2Gb of RAM and can play all of h264 720p staff and most of 1080p h264 rips - those, which are less than 20 Gb.

Elan, the developer of Plex uses an Xbox 360 controller instead of the remote. Plex is based on the XBMC code. I think the 1.66 Mini can even play 1080p.
