freezy Wrote:The basics, surely. However versions have changed in the meanwhile, so you may try to get it running differently with current latest versions. Let me know if you have an updated version so I can update the first two posts.

I don't know the steps to do if i would try in a dedicated new clean installation of Ubuntu+XBMC+VDR.

I also tried the plugin: http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36988
in this way:

Ubuntu 9.04
VDR 1.7.8 by script way: http://dvbn.happysat.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=50761
XBMC repository by this way: http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO_install_XBMC_for_Linux_on_Ubuntu_with_a_minimal_installation_step-by-step
i put this VDR dir: http://rapidshare.de/files/40444427/VDR.zip.html
in .xbmc/plugins/video/

And i don't know the difference between two ways..

Sorry for my english, and sometimes i am not able to understand all posts

Best regards

wocis Wrote:in ubuntu repos is 1.6.0... version
we need 1.7.4> (i think) with modified streamdev.
But som ppls here made their ppa repos, where you should take modified .deb packages and it works out of the box.

I have made succesfully this setup.
1) in living room - htpc - boot from 2gb flash, network-connected to my roof-pc.
On this htpc - installed xbmc live with these changes:
added repo https://launchpad.net/~henningpingel/+archive/xbmc to sources.list, and updated xbmc version to 9.04~pre+pvr-api+pvrclient-vdr~hepi-intrepid7

2) roof-pc - lowcost pc with some disks (swraid), dhcp server, mail server, dvb-t cards, network/movie/music storage.
On this roof-pc - installed ubuntu server 9.04
added repo
https://launchpad.net/~mirak-mirak/+archive/ppa and installed modified version of vdr 1.7.7-0+ppa2 and streamdev 0.3.4~cvs20090525-ppa2 (you should install vdradmin-am from officialy ubuntu repos for "web-frontend").
i configured vdr, started.

In this setup, all works out-of-the-box. You must configure vdr (channels.conf) and setup xbmc.
Now i am able to watch tv in "elegant" way.

so maybe i'm to stupid to read correct...

done exactly what is writen above. vdr starts without errors.

Code:
Restarting Linux Video Disk Recorder: vdr
Searching for plugins (VDR 1.7.7/1.7.7) (cache hit): streamdev-server.
root@XBMC:/etc/init.d# tail /var/log/syslog
Jul  7 18:26:51 XBMC lircd-0.8.4a[2493]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
Jul  7 18:26:51 XBMC vdr: [6882] Streamdev: Listening (VTP) on port 2004
Jul  7 18:26:51 XBMC vdr: [6882] Streamdev: Listening (HTTP) on port 3000
Jul  7 18:26:51 XBMC vdr: [6875] remote control LIRC - learning keys
Jul  7 18:26:51 XBMC vdr: [6883] LIRC remote control thread started (pid=6875, tid=6883)
Jul  7 18:26:53 XBMC vdr: [6879] CAM 1: no module present
Jul  7 18:26:53 XBMC vdr: [6879] CAM 2: no module present
Jul  7 18:27:01 XBMC vdr: [6875] switching to channel 1
Jul  7 18:27:01 XBMC vdr: [6875] setting watchdog timer to 60 seconds
Jul  7 18:27:01 XBMC vdr: [6875] OSD size changed to 480x324 @ 4:3

but /var/log/syslog has

Code:
Jul  7 18:30:28 XBMC vdr: [6957] frontend 0 timed out while tuning to channel 1, tp 111837

in xbmc i get "channel not available" sometimes it crashes

any ideas ? thx

Hi guys,

If you have problems setting up VDR (and anybody has in the beginning), you could also ask in the "International" section of the discussion board on http://www.vdr-portal.de. There you hopefully will get quick support from a large pool of VDR experts.

@DocViper: What kind of DVB card do you use? Is the DVB card recognized by the kernel? Maybe a missing firmware file? Maybe wrong content in /var/lib/vdr/channels.conf? Did you make a channelscan yourself?

Cheers,
hepi

- DocViper - 2009-07-08

@hepi: i am registered at the vdrportal (Username: DocViper -since 2004Big Grin ) but used linvdr and then easyvdr.
my card is a full feature dvb-s nexus 2.1
the video out on the "kabelpeitsche" does not show anything (with easyvdr it works perfect)

first had the firmware comming with the kernel in use - then installed the one from miraks repo.
but i guess there is the problem with the firmware or the initialisation of the dvb card

do i need extra packages (providing a frontend to vdr) - like vdr-sxfe to satisfy vdr ?
i used the channels.conf comming with the package from mirak
and tried one from linowsat
do i need to configure the runvdr skript ? stremdev-server seams to load properly.
is the setup.conf to be changed ? maybe i forgot something

i guess i'll reinstall jaunty again - maybe the is something wrong after severals experiments...

one thing i noticed is that now .iso dvd images play well - that didn't work with the previous version (incl. live-cd) i used. maybe there are dependencies not fullfilled and the xbmc developers didn't noticed that (maybe libdvdread4 was missing)

I really don't feel using streamdev is a good solution
it's way slower than vdr-xine or xineliboutput for channel switching.
I always noticed it was slow, even when using vlc or mplayer to acces to the stream.

but your packages use this method ?

i think dvb-s card is not correct initialized in my installation. format and reinstall Stare

there is just this way for now with xbmc

This is the best thing since buttered toast! - mikkle - 2009-07-09

This rocks!

A Huge thanks to the people hacking on the VDR/XBMC integration!
Can't wait to see the pvr branches getting merged into the trunk! Smile

That said, does anyone have the "TVGuide: Timeline" view working?
If so, what was the trick?
Is it just not working yet?

Cheers to all!

that thing drives me nuts Confused

> checked the kernel config - seems okay
> firmware - okay
> installed the w_scan script in the newest version - channelscan run without errors and finds all the channels and creates a new channels.conf - perfect
> vdr starts without errors - okay

but still the error
Code:
frontend 0 timed out while tuning to channel 1

google and vdrportal don't bring any helpfull hits... Sad

just wanted to give a short message of success to you !
enabeling disecq made the dvb-s card working properly. reason unknown (in easyvdr - another distribution related to vdr) i don't need that)

small summary of the steps:
1.) install by ubuntu mini
2.) add ppa and keys from gda and mirak
3.) install fluxbox and xterm
4.) install vdr and vdr-plugin-streamdev-server
5.) install xbmc from mirak
6.) test it
7.) enable autologin and autostart of xbmc --standalone

@DocViper: is your machine stable with that configuration?

Freezes when zapping - splinux - 2009-07-20

Hello,

I am already experimenting with xbmc and vdr for a while.
I am now running Jaunty, vdr (1.7.7) + xineliboutput + streamdev (cvs 20090525) from the package of Mirak.
The xbmc is the pvr-testing svn from 2 days ago. (r21754 i believe)
With all the versions I tried, I always have some freeze problems when changing from one channel to another.
For so far I can see, it seems that my system freezes when it comes to a channel that it can't decrypt, or if it need some more time than expected to decrypt it.
I already putted the timeout to 10 sec, but it's not better.
When it occurs, the image is frozen, sound gone, but the system still react to some keys (OK, next, previous (just give the info osd for a few second)).
To get out of there I need to kill xbmc.
Some time I can zap over 20 channels, some times not more than 2.
Does someone encounter the same kind of problems ?
Any idea how to solve it ?
thanks,

sp

- Dragm@ - 2009-07-20

@splinux: I have same your problems.
My configuration:
- Ubuntu 9.04
- XBMC PVR testing from svn
- VDR & Xine from this guide: http://dvbn.happysat.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=50761

VDR-Xine works perfectly

does it possible with pvr xbmc branch to control of vdr plugin and vdr settings, go to osd vdr menu, to use vdr plugins (femon, channellist,...) ?
