I think it is an known issue (haven't found about it) but with VDPAU there
is no thumbnail shown when bookmarking video.

Should i create a ticket for it?

Haggy Wrote:Sir, yessir! 185.18.14 fixes the 8200 issues finally. i have my xbmc set to 1920x1080p @50hz. and get 50fps right from startup with safefull disabled and strictbinding enabled!

Unfortunately I do not experience this. I still have to start windowed then full screen it or else i get about 12fps.

EDIT: that is on an 8300

hmm, weird. it definietly works for me here. can upload screenshots if you like

Haggy Wrote:EDIT: Try disabing Triplebuffer in xorg.conf - enabling it instantly crashes X for me also.

Thanks a lot Haggy! That was the issue. I really appreciate it!

Hello all,

I need some help debugging why I cannot play this famous "killa sample" HD material with VDPAU.
(First of all, I googled for "killa sample" and found a 10 seconds video where a hell lot of runners run through the country. Is this the correct sample? - I'm wondering because I expected full HD to be 1920x1080px, but this video is way larger...)

My hard-/software:
--> Asus P5N7A-VM board with Nvidia 9300 chip onboard
--> connected via HDMI to a Toshiba 37" LCD TV ("HD ready" only: 1366x768px)
--> Celeron-D 440 (2GHz)
--> 2 GB RAM (dual channel)
--> Mandriva 2009.1
--> Kernel 2.6.29.3
--> XBMC 9.04.1
--> Nvidia driver version: 185.18.14

SD Content plays fine (at 85% processor load), and the GUI is smooth. Great.

Last weekend, I compiled a somewhat weird modeline for my Xorg.conf according to a tutorial that I found. I went through some pain to finally get a full screen X11 desktop drawn on the screen without overscan an other nastyness.
Actually, I really fine with the quality of the output.

This modeline (and it's the only one in my xorg.conf file) is forced, and size is unusual: 1824x1020px!

When I now play this "killa sample" video sniplet, I either get:
- 9 FPS, I can see something like in slow-motion, and I have 100% CPU load.
(obviously not VDPAU, I guess)

- 50 FPS, and a ugly pattern on the screen after I forced the display to use VDPAU.

I scanned the xbmc.log file and found some error messages, but the file size is >1 MB, so I don't know how to extract the relevant information.

The extract below seems interesting. I am wondering whether VDPAU can do scaling to this weird target resolution, or if this not possible due to technical limitations.

Can someone help out with a suggestion?

Thanks a lot!
Marcus

I have no idea what video you downloaded

the "official killa sample" is the bird scene from BBC's Planet Earth Blurays and can be found here: http://rapidshare.com/files/82525583/killa.sampla.x264.mkv.html

- marcuszurhorst - 2009-06-12

Ok, this may be issue # 1 Oo

Thanks for the link. I downloaded this one now. And now I have a hell lot of birds. Wow.Big Grin
I have the renderer set to "auto", but it is not using VDPAU. I get 10-11 FPS, and have 100% CPU load.

I'll scan the log for relevant information. I feel that need to assign more RAM to the GPU probably. Don't know.
(I understood a Nvidia changelog that this is done automatically, but I may be wrong here...)

Regards,
Marcus

- Haggy - 2009-06-12

You have to force VDPAU in settings. it will gracefully drop back to GLSL if it's not supported. Auto does not enable VDPAU even if available. Also make sure you have 512MB assigned to the IGP and you are running dualchannel. i can play killa with some minor glitches and judder on my 8300.

Shocked

- pyrates - 2009-06-12

3840x2160 at 50 fps? That's 4k material, of course it won't play. No hardware yet on the consumer side to play that back yet. You don't even have a high enough resolution to show all the detail of of it.

I'd like to know where you got this 4k sample from btw. It be a new standard to live up to even though we won't have the resources to play it for a couple years.

- marcuszurhorst - 2009-06-12

Hehe. that happened when I googled "killa sample", that simple.
Combined with the facts that I a) did not know what I'm looking for and b) there is a slight language barrier, I ended up with this sample.

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4197285/Killer_Sample_-_Quad_Full_High_Definition

But as I mentioned, I have now similar trouble with the killa birds sample :-)
I will increase IGP memory tomorrow morning and try it again.

BTW: The whole XBMC GUI is pretty fast, but from a newbie point of view, I have really difficulties to overview the various menus. Why are there two independent video setups?

Oh, and is there a easy way to go back to the defaults? - Just want to make sure that I haven't screwed up with my settings. Is deleting ~/.xbmc the right thing to do?

Cheers,
Marcus

- mkortstiege - 2009-06-12

Yeah deleting ~/.xbmc will do the job

- marcuszurhorst - 2009-06-13

Ok, it almost works now.

But I have a horizontal "scan line" (like on CRT TVs??) running slowly through the video.
Still, be birds fly smooth, and sound is clear.

ERamseth Wrote:Unfortunately I do not experience this. I still have to start windowed then full screen it or else i get about 12fps.

EDIT: that is on an 8300

Ok, i looked a bit deeper into the settings. It seems like using the "(Fullscreen)" resolution, i get exactly half the fps that is shown, so it's 25fps for the 50Hz mode. Using f.e. the "1920x1080@50Hz" resolution however i get 50fps w/o a problem. Same for "1920x1080@24Hz" and so on... those resolutions are available since i modelined them into my xorg.conf. Nevertheless i cannot remember getting even 25fps in fullscreen mode with the older drivers. Why it's exactly half the refresh rate i don't know...same for my "1920x1080@60Hz" modeline, which renders at 30fps. Playing a movie switches to the desired refresh rate and stays stable for most of the files, though for some 1080p movies it can't keep up the framerate sometimes.

I have a 8200 IGP and everything is working fine in vdpau (with safefull)

However, when I am using vdpau noise reduction, the 8200 seems to run into trouble (stuttering video)

In the log file, I can find "the avcodec_decode_video didn't consume the full packet" when vdpau noise reduction is enabled.

Can somebody confirm this is a hardware limitation of the 8200? Or should I check other things?
