(by and by i used to live in somerville.)

and I use to live in Boston. I'm in LA now.
but anyways.

recommend a program for scp?
on my VM Win7 I have winscp.

I know nothing about Linux. The only way I got this up and running the first time was following explicit instructions, not understanding exactly what they were.

Edit:
I tried a few suggestions from another thread without luck. I believe the system sees the disk but isn't mounting it?

On my system fdisk -l reports:
dev/sdb1 ID=42 System=SFS

Mount reports:
dev/sda1
Mount does not mention sdb1

not quite sure how many hardrives your system has. for rite now you can try:
Code:
mkdir ide-hd; sudo mount /dev/sdb1 ide-hd
in the meantime, can you please post the contents of:
Code:
cat /etc/fstab

if winscp doesnt work, perhaps it is a router issue ?

I haven't changed anything other then installing new live version of Dharma on my revo. I was able to scp/ftp/etc into previous version with no issues.

BUT for the life of me I cant FTP into xbmc to setup the .asoundrc because I have no audio right now!

I've tried from both Win and Mac OS's, multiple different FTP programs on each.
they all basically error

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

I'm able to connect to the xbmc web interface from computers and iphone, even from outside my house.

Sounds like I'm having the same sound issue you are. Is there an explanation of the fix somewhere?

edit so not to confuse anybody with all my file editing and rambling.

here's the Dharma Revo 3610 HDMI answer.

go to programs, then audio mixer. Unmute all IEC devices.

audio setting should be

output : hdmi
speaker config : (mine is set for 2.0 since i'm only using tv audio)
dolby digital AC3 checked (if your device can handle that)
dts checked
audio output device : hdmi
passthrough device : hdmi

edit for previous post

- bostoneric - 2010-12-20

: Doh : !

- bostoneric - 2010-12-20

that has seemed to work for most audio types but I notice not for all.
still working on a better answer

did the nvidia drivers update per that thread. not sure if that helped but cant be a bad thing to have the latest drivers.

then unchecked Dolby Digital AC3 receiver. that fixed the static for me!

Did you have to do anything special to make the usb stick bootable? I did the same but mine boots to a blinking dash.

I'd love to but I can't. At another suggestion, I updated grub from a live disk and now my system boots to a grub prompt. I don't have the file etc/default/grub. I don't know where to go from here but I'm ready to chunk the machine in the fireplace.

edbro, try this:

addon for all usb-storage users:

Code:
sudo apt-get install usbmount

will add automounting of usb drives directly to the video section.

therefor edit

Code:
sudo nano /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf

add filesystem vfat and ntfs to the list.

Code:
FILESYSTEMS="ext2 ext3 vfat ntfs"

Thanks Sam.vw. If I can figure out how to get out of this grub prompt I will try your suggestions.
