Hello,
thank you for great program. I have Ubuntu 9.10 with ATI graphics. I use Compiz. If I watch some movie, screen its a little tearing. Any idea how to fix it? My VLC player plaing all videos ok, only if I have activated in Compiz manager "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows". In the last version Ubuntu 9.04 I didnt needed this function activated. All was ok, but I didnt used xbmc.
Thanks for help

The relevant bit is:

Problems on Linux
We get occasional reports in the forum (http://forum.xbmc.org/) that 1080p won't play on Linux. Assuming you have an nVidia card that supports VDPAU (see the Wikipedia article) try updating the video drivers. Also try switched off all the Gnome desktop visual effects.
