i use pin87's image and i'd recommend an 8gig usb thumb drive...
other than that, just follow the intructions in the first post

with these new drivers will i be able to play 1080/720 video files on my appletv without any slowdowns over my wireless 802.11g network? or does it require an extra piece of hardware?

802.11g for 1080p, not a chance, nothing will help you.

CrystalHD uses the bcm70012/bcm70015 hardware video decoder in place of the AppleTVs internal wifi card.

so i would have to purchase this card and open up my atv and take out the wifi card? I don't want to lose my wifi. Is this a difficult install?

Yes you have to purchase a crystal HD card
Yes you have to take the wifi card out (so you lose wifi)
Its a bit daunting to peel off the rubber and open up the atv but actually VERY easy once you take the plunge. see here for some instructions

Let it warm up and get hot, the rubber will peel off easier. And you only need to peel back the corners to expose the four torx screws.

Got busy with work so no time to play...the Broadcom card has been calling my name though so maybe this long weekend I'll install it...

So just checking in - is the above still the latest & greatest? I have Dharma Beta 2 running on the ATV with the Night Skin...I have the Launcher menu item added for the above.

So s/b all set? Or has anything been updated/changed in the past 6 weeks?

Thanks!

The r156 release is the latest precompiled set of drivers. There have been updated SVN's since then if you wish to try them by compiling your own drivers.

- andy204 - 2010-10-08

i have not updated to the lastest version (r170) yet. i wait for the driver to be rockstable or another "gogogo" from davilla. compiling the driver is not hard, so thats not the issue.

r171 release - aerotheque - 2010-10-11

- redacted -

aerotheque Wrote:For those interested I just compiled r171 earlier since (I think) I needed that anyway to get the BCM970015 working right. I branched andy204's script for the r171 kext and made it available for those that don't want to d/l xcode. You can use it by running:

Code:
defaults write com.teamxbmc.xbmclauncher XBMCAdditionalDownloadPlistURLs -array-add http://www.jacobpierce.com/files/crystalhd/crystalhd.plist

This seems to work great but is just a holdover to davilla pushing a dot release and andy picking it up. Thanks again for the great script and support andy.

Hi aerotheque,

and big Thx, but based r171 on driver 3.6.0 or 3.8.0? After check in my ATV I saw the following output:

kextstat | grep crystalhd = ..... com.broadcom.crystalhd.driver (3.6.0)

Is that ok, or an Issue?

I got the same problem. The info.plist in the downloaded archiv shows 3.8.0 but the old 3.6.0 driver is not overwritten.

I have installed the CrystalHD in my Apple TV. And installed the nightlies released (14th Sept). And installed the driver too.
I couldn't find anything to turn on in the system. The CrystalHD under rendering was already ticked.

Is there some file that I can download to see it working properly, 720P and 1080P?
Should 1080P be working properly now?

If you get an crystalHD option under video settings everything should be fine. Play a 720p movie with/whitout crystalHD aktivated and you see the differens.

Did you install crystalHD r171?
