Thanks again.

I was under the mistaken belief that vdpau still needed to be enabled so to speak even with the binary drivers.

Good to know about the PCM fix in the new drivers too; lots of great xbmc info but things get outdated quickly.

Is there any reason to avoid the amd64 256.35 driver versus the 256.25 in this thread?

Nope, the guide could do with being updated to use the 256.35 driver

cheers

is this build only meant to give you access to terminal because I have no idea how to get to the desktop or other apps. such as Firefox, Xchat etc.

AFAIK the minimal install will give you NO desktop / window manager or other apps; just a kernel, X11 server basically.

EDIT: looks like according to screenshot you can pick a desktop and other apps...http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMCbuntu

I'm guessing most of these are done after the fact through the package manager since you can't fit much on the 14 MB iso.

This guide is meant for a minimal install, meaning no desktop, firefox etc. If you install a desktop on top of this guide it will screw up. Your probably better off just installing ubuntu desktop edition and xbmc-standalone.

cheers

I'll have to have a look, but I was up until 3:20 am last night trying to get this stupid fucking thing to install nvidia drivers

I am having a terrible time I followed the directions to the letter until I get to this part

Code:
sudo apt-get -- purge remove nvidia-*
looks good until the last line which reads.
E: Couldn't find package nvidia-*

I tried to install the driver anyways, but get that Kernel.ko error the guide speaks of, and I have added the necessary files to my blacklist.conf file so I really don't know how to proceed

I guess I need to start over from scratch with desktop because running Firefox is a MUST in order for me to run Sabnzbd, Couch potato , SIckBeard. unless you know of another way I can run those 3 apps with out a web browser and being able to add content.

You dont need a web browser on the htpc running those apps. just connect to the web interface from another computer on your network. Like ://ip-of-your-htpc:8080/sabnzbd/. Simple

cheers

ahh using the SSH method ?

I've never used SSH, before so its completely foreign to me I suppose I could use my Moto Droid to talk to my HTPC as well.

now im off to search for SSH guides.

but also I sill do not have a working install of Nvidia drivers and XBMC as I have stopped at the part where I am to purge remove nvidia-*

No not ssh. All you do is run those apps on the htpc. Then go to your desktop or laptop, open a web browser and go the the address of the app.

sabnzb would be http://ip-of-htpc:8080/sabnzbd/

sickbeard http://ip-of-htpc:8081/home

Its really that simple.

As for the nvidia driver problem. If you are following the guide to the letter it will work. Here is a post i made to edit the blacklist file

give zssh a try too... - thethirdnut - 2010-07-22

Flomaster,

If you get ssh sorted out another thing worth looking into is zssh.

Just do a sudo apt-get install zssh

This is basically just ssh with the lzrz package...it let's you xfer files between two machines right within the shell instead of using scp.

Basically, the first thing I do when getting any new linux box running is firewall then ssh server. Once that is done you can use zssh to transfer config files, etc all before you get any other samba or nfs stuff working.

You can use an USB stick as well of course, but this saves you the trouble of gathering them all together and copying back and forth...just shoot files straight across over an ssh session.

This is mainly geared for linux-to-linux transactions.

OMFG I want to take the HTPC and throw it in the street.

I have followed the guide to the T and I keep getting the error

E: Couldn't find package nvidia-*

where or HOW can I find out if I have this said "nvidia" on my computer btw I am running Zotac ionitx-L-E so I am pretty damn sure I have Nvidia already installed

-=Jason=-

- harryzimm - 2010-07-23

The command

Quote:sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*

is just a precautionary measure to remove any previous drivers. If you are getting "E: Couldn't find package nvidia-*". Then just continue to the next step.

well I just gave up and installed the full desktop version. I have the latest SVN up and running, a 1080P movie Avatar that previously didn't play is now playing :-) but standard mp3 audio 2 channel shows and movies do not have any audio. I have no upgraded my Nvidia Driver yet to the 265.35 that will be this weekend.
