remotly control xbmc using laptop? - philw132 - 2010-07-21

while at work today one of our service guys asked me "do you know anything about media center computers" i of course replied "YES" he said what program would work. well, i told him on any platform use "XBMC MEDIA CENTER" he said that he doesnt want to connect a remote control or keyboard/mouse to it, he wants to be able to remotely control it (opening movies, music, pictures much like the android app works) using his laptop. i thought that was a strange question, however i told him i would get him an answer.

Is this even possible with the current xbmc layout?

thanks!

Phil

Yes, there are several methods.

1. use the web interface - enable this through Settings, Network

2. use an EventClient app - there's a really slick one at a URL I've forgotten (hopefully someone around here will remember it) or I have a really crude one at http://swarchive.ratsauce.co.uk/eventclient.zip that was written as a quick test

3. the next version, Dharma (in beta now), will support JSON though I must admit I'm not sure what this is or how it works

You can use a program called input diretor if you want to control mouse + keyboard on another PC.
