What happened to the cheap Nettops? - hogfan - 2010-11-04

I've got a Revo 1600 that is working great for me for over a year now running XBMC Live. I added another gig of RAM for $25 and have smooth 1080p playback. I am looking to build a similar box for my dad for xmas and can't seem to find any "cost-effective" nettops anymore. I only paid $200 for my 1600 and all of the new Revo models are around $340+. This is no longer a cost effective box for XBMC. Anybody know of anywhere that is still selling the 1600, or an alternative box that is comparable in price and specs? Thanks.

The ZOTAC ZBOX

The Foxconn NT-330

Both systems are capable of full 1080p for around the same price. You do need to either run XBMC Live from a USB stick / SD Card, or internal 2.5 inch drive and add RAM.

Have you tried ebay? Just checked, and there's a couple used ones under $200.

Woo pig sooie

Boxee Box $199 ...

- BORIStheBLADE - 2010-11-04

Ya I noticed that too. It seems as if they only want to build ion nettops with dual core cpu's.

I have tried the Zotac nettops and they seem too loud for me.

Agreed, I am very excited about the prospects for hobbyists with the Boxee Box. I'm not interested in the Boxee software at all, but as soon as it's hacked I'm in for one.

since the BIOS update which effectively gets rid of the fan noise I can really recommend the foxconn 330i as a capable, cheap and small barebone system

- sebj - 2010-11-05

I bought a 330i and right now, I'm thinking it won't do 1080p video unless you put 4gigs of ram.

2gigs and the bios only gives you 256mb of video memory, 4 gigs will give you 512 mb, thus 1080p.

I just go the box and this limitation is really a shock, because the boxis pretty dang sweet for the money

Open to suggestions though. big letdown

INFLATION... thank Bernake and the other banksters for that...

2gigs in my foxconn, 256MB assigned, 1080p works flawless. we need more info about the steps you took to install XBMC on the machine. I went the XBMCbuntu route from the beginning, never had any playback problems even with high bitrate files.

Ok, thanks for reassuring me there. I'm willing to give it a shot for sure.

I tried xbmclive iso Dharma beta4

Have to admit I'm getting better results in maverick 64bit, but like I said the 1280x720@60p hdpvr mythtv and the 1920x1080 canon 7d video(45mbps) is a no go.

Hannes, one question though, are you running xbmc@720p letting the onkyo upscale it or something, because my mythtv recordings seem to play at that res! At least I have a temp workaround....

Are you running dharma beta 4 on lucid?

thanks!

Hogfan....

Researching XMBC capabilities with PC and Plex with Mac Mini.... in process of setting up an HTPC and use of ESPN3.com is essential.
How do you incorporate ESPN3.com into XMBC? Am AVID supporter of the Arkansas Razorbacks.... love your screen name and avatar.

- Flomaster - 2010-11-08

murthage, you can use a webbrowser with xbmc live so in theory you should be able to get to espn3.com however I've no idea what you don on that site, if its streaming of flash or xxxx not sure if it would benefit you at all

Thanks for the quick response.... if I can get to the ESPN3 website as you say, I'm good to go. That website provides real time streaming of sporting events.

Your avatar is cool also....

Don't get too excited, that particular pluggin in Plex is often broken. The Plex community has more intellectual types (the learning pluggins never break) and less sporty types- it took forever for that pluggin to be made despite its obvious awesomeness!

What I personally would do is just stick Windows 7 on the ION box. You can still use XBMC, and use Windows 7's superior Flash support to play HD ESPN3 streams in a web browser.....
