Schoole me ~ Naming conventions - gecko5 - 2011-01-06

Hi all,

Long time listener, first time caller..

Been trying to determine/find references to the best naming conventions to use for the various media as well as specifically for a media type. In my collection

MUSIC (Quite large, complete albums)
• ROCK
• 0-9
• A
• Artist lname, Artist fname (bitrate, 2 cd set, year) - album name
• disc 1
• track# - song title
• track# - song title
• disc 2
• track# - song title
• B
• Artist lname, Artist fname (bitrate, 2 cd set, year) - album name
• disc 1
• track# - song title
• track# - song title
• disc 2
• track# - song title
• CLASSICAL
• 0-9
• A
• Artist lname, Artist fname (bitrate, 2 cd set, year) - album name
• disc 1
• track# - song title
• track# - song title
• disc 2
• track# - song title
• B
• Artist lname, Artist fname (bitrate, year) - album name
• track# - song title
• track# - song title
• track# - song title

This is how i've always kept it sorted for my various audio players i've used over the years..

Regarding video though, i am fairly new..

Currently, i have about:

250 movies of various quality, some in 2 discs
15 or so odd TV shows, multiple seasons, each with various episodes, organized by:
• TV Show
• Season 1
• S1 - E1 - Episode Name
• S1 - E2 - Episode Name
• Season 2
• S2 - E1 - Episode Name
• S2 - E2 - Episode Name
Well over 100 or so personal home videos, organized by:
• xxxx-xx-xx - event
• xxxx-xx-xx - event
1000's of photos, organized by:
• Year
• xxxx-xx-xx - event
• xxxx-xx-xx - event - 01
• xxxx-xx-xx - event - 02
• xxxx-xx-xx - event - xx

What are the best approaches for naming conventions? Am i on the right track?

FWIW - Windows XP running XBMC latest.

Thanks all.

I tried and tried and tried to get linux up but was defeated by driver incompatibilities Smile I took the easy road i guess.

Best filenames - Jay_M - 2011-01-08

I have been going back and forth on the idea of adding intelligent information in my movie/tv filenames. I have seen others have moviename.codec.resolution.ext in their filenames and wondered what your opinions are of the pros and cons of doing so and what naming conventions are best to follow. I don't mean the filename to be used for scraping but as a quick way to tell what a file contains, for my own personal record keeping.
