[AppleTV2]HOWTO Enable BT Keyboard support - Senaxx - 2011-01-28

Everybody hates text import with the apple remote, that why their is a package to make bluetooth keyboards working on a ATV2.

1. SSH into your ATV2
2. type: apt-get install ch.ringwald.keyboard-atv
3. type: apt-get install org.tomcool.btstack-ui
4. type: killall AppleTV

Now you have everything setup and it's time to pair the keyboard.

5. In Frontrow goto Settings -> Custom Settings -> BTStack

and starts searching for your BT Keyboard.
It took me some fiddeling to get the keyboard in pairing mode, but after turning on the keyboard and a quick 3 presses on the keyboard made it pair.

Type in 0000 and press enter, and you are done Smile

You can use this keyboard in the main menu and in XBMC Smile enjoy!

I don't see a Custom Settings menu.

Me neither, what build is required for this?

To clarify, those packages are not part of XBMC, so the Settings -> Custom Settings -> BTStack is actually in frontrow, not in XBMC

Hi all

I got it connected finally. It took a while to get the apple keyboard in pairing mode. I had to get the little green light flashing slowly.

The arrow keys work fine for navigating as does the return key for select/enter. However, I can't seem to be able to do any text entry. Eg typing text into the you tube search field in 'frontrow'. Text entry doesn't work for me in xbmc either.

Yep, same here. The keyboard works great, apart from for text entry! Darn!

I found that the iPhone remote apps would also work great, apart from the "keyboard" function too. So I don't think this is related to Bluetooth.

Hi Senaxx, Im going to give this a try with a mini keyboard I have. How to I reverse the above if it doesn't work.

Thanks Gav

Yeah, pairing is fine. But can't input actual text character at the moment. Both in the Lowtide gui and the XBMC gui. But it's a good first step.

perhaps it would be useful to list which bt keyboards work and which dont.
some ppl on irc reported success with the apple keyboard.
testing should be made in both youtube(frontrow) and xbmc in order to determine if the issue is in BTStack or XBMC itself
I wanted to use my E71 as bt keyboard, but although BTStack discovers it, I can't pair, so there must be a service missing in the nokia stack

Tried my keyboard and it pairs fine. But no functions other than space bar works and enter key leave an "a".

The keyboard is one of the cheapy Chinese type the size of a mobile phone.

Brand: Apple
Model: A1314

YouTube(frontrow): Arrows(Yes), Esc(Yes), Return(Yes), TextEntry(No)
XBMC: Arrows(Yes), Esc(Yes), Return(Yes), TextEntry(No)

davilla pushed a commit on the 28th supposed to fix bluetooth keyboard.
So please follow instructions below to install latest version (29th) and re-test

Thanks

Davilla had to remap all ios keys to xbmc keys. If you upgrade, it should work in xbmc now.

I own a Magic Trackpad, do you think it will be also supported in a future version or is already supported?
