That's weird, I haven't heard of any problems doing this.

well, have you made the test!? Tongue

No, but I've read about people using non-x16 cards in the x16 slot in unraid setups with no issues. A lot of guys do that.

would you specify what non-x16 cards are exactly?

x1, x4, or x8 cards. Cards that don't require all 16 lanes of an x16 slot.

It should work by the standard. But the problem is many mobo makers only test 16x cards and sometimes 1x cards won't work in the slot. It is hit or miss.

Well that doesn't make sense - If the 1x lane is faulty then that would fail the whole slot and hence the 16x tests

if the 16x slot work per mobo spec, the 1x card should work in the 16x slot. i remember use 1x video card in the 16x slot several years ago. it worked fine!

Hence the Hit and Miss factor described by Poofy!

if mobo work properly, it shouldn't be hit and miss because 1x option is included in 16x slot.

Again, as I said, the standard says that it should work. Some mobo makers obviously don't follow the standard. I quote page 18 of an Official Zotac Mobo Manual:

Quote:Note: The PCIE x16 slot supports PCIE graphics cards, but does not support any PCIE x1 device.

Should be, but sometimes mobo makers don't seem to follow the standard 100%.

if they make 16x slot to something else other than standard 16x slot, they should call it something else.

Shame on Zotac for bending the rule!
