RE: [RELEASE] Canada On Demand (Successor to CTV Properties) - comfox1 - 2014-03-08

how do I go from the old 8.5 version to the Github version properly? I deleted the old on in XBMC, deleted the directory then extraced the zip to said directory and in XBMC installed from zip file.

However after all that the plugin no longer works...won't play ANY shows.

Here is a snipit of my log.

RE: [RELEASE] Canada On Demand (Successor to CTV Properties) - gambitz - 2014-03-09

Anybody have CC or subtitles working with this addon? NONE of the shows have cc working.

as a matter of fact, hgtv.ca have closed captioning which is quite cool because it is exact like what you see on TV - Closed Captioning is better than subtitles.

Anyways, please let me know how to get this working and hopefully in the same style as I am used to on hgtv.ca

RE: [RELEASE] Canada On Demand (Successor to CTV Properties) - Warner306 - 2014-03-09

I don't use this channel, but, for those that do, CTV is not working. I can't get past the channel front-end without getting a script error.

RE: [RELEASE] Canada On Demand (Successor to CTV Properties) - msurasky - 2014-03-18

Hi all...

I have spent some time in the last 48 hours trying to make CBC work... when I play any episode in any program on the CBC channel I got the infamous "plugin failed" message.

I know that there has been problems with CBC in the past but it was my impression that they were fixed. Having said that, I ran these steps...
1) downloaded the zip from https://github.com/marius-muja/plugin.video.canada.on.demand,
2) uninstalled the old plugin
3) rebooted my XMBC
4) installed the zip i downloaded in step 1
... but the problem with CBC is still there.

Am I missing something? Am I downloading the wrong version? (the zip I get is 2,858,876 bytes) and it shows as version 0.8.5

Any help is appreciated!

msurasky my system shows the version as being 0.8.6 so for some reason you're not getting the most current version. Was this your initial install or are you upgrading from a previous version?

msurasky try installing the repository as detailed in this post (link) by icharania

Thanks a ton pdops

You hit on the nail!

The problem was that I was trying to get the latest cut of the Add On from https://github.com/marius-muja/plugin.video.canada.on.demand while in reality I had to use https://github.com/irfancharania/canada.on.demand.repo/blob/master/zips/repository.CanadaOnDemand/repository.CanadaOnDemand-1.1.0.zip?raw=true

Mistery solved! Smile

RE: [RELEASE] Canada On Demand (Successor to CTV Properties) - PatK - 2014-03-19

Just watched 'The National' on my Gotham B2, great to see this in operation for Gotham.

RE: [RELEASE] Canada On Demand (Successor to CTV Properties) - Warner306 - 2014-03-19

I have previously been using the marius-muja github zipfiles to update, but tried installing the repo instead. After installation, it says an update is available from the repo (0.8.6) but will not update - "Dependencies not met" is the issue. Any suggestions?

This is Gotham Beta 2, by the way.

This is Gotham Beta 2, by the way.

I installed the git version and experience the same inability to update. It would appear the update is not yet compatible with Gotham Beta 2.

You can ignore that warning. It says "dependencies not met" because the addon.xml file in the repo still supports eden.

The repo has the same fixes as on github, but with the version number bumped up because I was having issues with it auto updating.

** Update: I submitted a request to get the version number bumped up on github to 0.8.6

It occurs to me that much of the problems associated with making this plugin work correctly stems from the efforts of the CBC and CTV in making it as difficult as possible for site scraping to work. Obviously, there has to be a reason for this. I cite an example for how streaming television content on CTV now operates. Some content seems to stream without problem when you access it directly from the CTV website. But in my mind, not surprisingly, more recent content, that is fresh within a few days, requires that you log on, confirm your existing cable television provider details and then and only then are you permitted to view the content on line. What that implies is that television networks are now insisting that you have an existing service agreement with the likes of Shaw, Rogers etc., in that you subscribe to their television packages. Not that you have an internet connection with them that could provide you with television services from network websites, no, they are blatantly forcing you to subscribe to cable television AS A PRECONDITION TO ever allowing you to access tv programming on line. They are implementing this slowly, bit by bit, step by step hoping the tv viewing public won't reach anything approaching a critical mass and confront them. What a sneaky underhanded bunch of criminals. It isn't enough that we don't object to commercials accompanying the streams, no, they want to actually corner you and make it possible for cable tv providers to stick their hands into your wallet and take what they want. If it isn't clear now, why the switch to digital television resulted in a significantly reduced over the air broadcast range, it should now. The whole point of it was to kettle the tv viewing public and force them to deal with only a select group of cable tv providers. Monopoly. With the full knowledge and agreement of the CRTC and the federal government.

Maybe this question is not strictly related to Canada On Demand (I leave this for you to judge) but I have not noticed this problem when watching other video streams so I think it must be related.

When I'm watching something (and I have seen this problem applies to every program in every channel) and I stop, then return the next day... I can't seek to that specific point in time where I left.

The Fast Forward (and Review for that matter) buttons just don't work. If I press the FF button the plug-in will eventually HANG or the video get stuck and out of sync with the audio. The conclusion: this plugin is only good when your intention is to watch the program back-to-back and useless if you are planning to watch it during 2 or 3 times.

Have all experienced the same? is it a problem of the plugin or are the streams sources the cause of it.

I know the plug-in is not paid and help is on a voluntary basis but If this affects every channel and every user, it would be great to see someone looking into the ability to fix this problem.

Hats off to those spending time and effort on this plug-in. Even with all the problems is waaaay better than nothing Smile.

Cheers!

@xbtoast

It's not that they are "a sneaky underhanded bunch of criminals." but like the rest of the industry they have a failed business model. There is a move afoot to curtail OTA broadcasting as well, many areas in Canada that used to have CBC analog service, no longer have any service at all save for satellite (CBC claims there is no $ in the budget for the conversion, so they just shut down the local broadcasters). I'm sure many of the smaller stations have a policy that more or less coincides with your observations, but CBC is a national carrier and as such is mostly subsidized by the taxpayer and has an obligation to fulfil it's mandate, but of late it's straining this relationship with the consumer, with specialty shows on pay cable, and station shut downs. Thank Harper and his appointed lackeys, they're determined to destroy CBC and make it their propaganda political machine, while saving tax dollars. This is all under the guise of free market competition, which as most Canadians know, is not free market at all... with 3 major companies monopolizing the entire telecommunication business.

The way these corporations act, you would think they produced the content, as if they alone are creative, that they alone bring you the fruits of the world.

Logic would suggest that if a broadcaster who once had a limited broadcast range, given the opportunity to expand that range to world markets, would jump at the chance. But logic only plays a role looking at a much bigger picture. We have ISP's and the big carriers, networks fighting for gatekeeper status, Google, MS, News services all want their little piece and even governments don't want to be left out of this picture, it's all about control and who is in charge.

COD falls victim to this tussle, as companies like Akamai streaming which more or less guarantees that users must visit the web site (and get exposed to all the non important content) to get their freshly made address. You can't blame any web site for turning to large operation like Akamai, offering fast streams to large numbers with secruity that ensures your web site will be looked at.

FTA:
Quote:Over 25 leading global broadcasters worked with Akamai to deliver the action, excitement and inspiration of Sochi because they understand online viewers expect to see every second of competition without delays or dropped streams. Akamai's cloud-based digital media, site performance and security solutions help make the online experience faster, scalable and more secure.

Until the broadcasters come to terms with their presence on the web, and deliver content as the market wants, they will end up in the back seat of the gatekeepers.
