What is the difference between ios 4 and ios5? Choppy on 5?
#1
Hello,

I just bought a second ATV2 to use in my kids room for XBMC only. This one came with IOS 5.1, so I promptly tether-jailbroke it and followed the forum post to get XBMC loaded on it (using the SSH method first, then using the memphis take-3 to update it.) This went Ok and XBMC can now be loaded from the main menu. I added my video shares (same as the ones on my 4.4 ATV2) and began trying to play a file. I found that most files play in a choppy method on the IOS5 ATV but the same files play fine without interruption on my 4.4. Is this expected behavior? Both ATVs are connected via Wireless-N and both are getting their content from a CIFS share on my FreeNas system. The only real change in them is the IOS version. I know that the XBMC that is available for ISO5 isn't the same, but does it have some performance issues that the older version doesnt? Just not sure if I should just sell this IOS5 version or wait until a "more-stable" release comes out for IOS5. Thanks!

It is possible to downgrade to a lower firmware if you don't like the performance in 5.1.

I think everyone noticed iOS using more resources (and less for XBMC) after 4.3, but it wasn't clear if the jump to iOS 5.0+ used even more.

It might be for other reason? Did you set them up identical? Try looking at the studdering tips in the Wiki (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBM...choppiness)

Perhaps the wireless signal is weaker? You could try placing it in the same location as your working one and test.

go wired. beside that the xbmc for ios5.1 version is identical to eden, only made compatible with ios5.1. Nothing which changes the performance.

I thought the downgrade was only possible if you already used atv black to begin with to backup your shsh blobs. I just got this IOS5 ATV2 used so I don't have the blobs. As far as the wireless signal being weaker, if I use my other ATV2 in the same location on 4.4.4 it works flawlessly. Maybe I did some tweaking on the old one that I am not remembering. I will continue to troubleshoot. Can I move the "config" from my 4.4.4 atv2 to my 5.1 somehow to be sure they are identical?

Yes you can - just check out the section on backing up your settings:

You can just copy from your 4.4.4 ATV to your 5.1 ATV.

I have 2 atv"s one on 4.4.4 the other on 5.1 and I haven't seen any choppiness running on a wired connection.

Nope. Using iFaith, you don't need any blobs saved. It takes care of signing older firmwares.

The process is complicated, but the instructions are very detailed and it works perfectly.

As far as I know there is significant choppiness/lag when playing files that have .ass or .ssa subtitle files in it due to the increased resource use of iOS 5. Other than that I've had no issue with other media so far and still waiting for devs to update us on this particular issue.

Did the files you played contain subtitles ?

Crawl- I was able to get to 4.4.2 tethered, but not to 4.4.4 as I can't get 4.4.4 blobs saved..can only get 5.0. I will try and load XBMC on this build (4.4.2) and see if it performs any better.

No subtitles..just various avi, mkv, mp4 containers.

No, it's legit. I was able to get to 4.4.2 tethered from 5.1, but can't get any further without blobs.

It's not a joke. The process does exactly what it says.
