Currently there are a number of pages already in that namespace, e.g. http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add...PVR_client that should either be merged under PVR, or they should be merged to Add-on: There is also already a category: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Cat...VR_add-ons I also posted my query on the PVR talk page: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Talk:PVR

Well, the add-on namespace is mainly for individual add-on entries more than it is for add-on related pages, while the sub-pages of the PVR guide are about both the add-ons and the backends. I wasn't sure how much over-lap there would be, so if it makes more sense to just have everything on the PVR add-on page and then link directly to that (and not have a sub page here) then we can certainly do that instead.

I can certainly see the logic in having a general page about the PVR backend/add-on and an add-on specific page. But even if that was the intention, it doesn't seem that other wiki contributors were aware of that structure, otherwise there would already be links between each of the PVR/<backend> and Add-on:<client for backend> for the pages that do currently exist. In this case, however, I think there's a good argument for consolidation. Why not just keep the add-on pages, and have the top-section about the add-on client and a lower section about backend setup. Also if detailed configuration information is going to be in the Add-on:<client for backend>, then it shouldn't be repeated in the PVR/<backend> page.

The one issue I think new users have with the information on the wiki in general is not that there isn't good information, but that there are too many pages that cover the same topic but from slightly different angles, rather than all being a single place (or at least just a few). This also leads to pages becoming out of sync with each other, and sometimes eventually being abandoned with outdated information. For example for MythTV we already have three pages:

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=PVR/MythTV
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-on:MythTV_PVR
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=MythTV

(and lot of information the last page could probably be archived in Talk: or under some Archive: namespace, does one exist?)

Hmm, I see now that in some cases some of the information from the add-on page is transcluded, e.g.

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=PVR/VDR

transcludes the "Settings" section of this page:

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add...NSI_Client

This seems too obvious to not have been covered, but I'm still having trouble finding anything of the sort.
Is there a list of currently working features for each add-on at this point? As of right now, they all seem equally unknown and I haven't had a chance to try any out just yet.

EDIT: Ah, I see. I didn't notice the individual add-on pages and that most are incomplete at the moment. At least I know where to watch.

Still trying to find and follow this thread!

I understand that these PVR pages keep changing as you knock them into shape.

Can someone please tell me how the screenshots work? Have looked at both Myth and MP wiki pages that have screenshots but they do not appear to be content on those pages? How can I get NextPVR screenshots up without mucking anything about?

cheers

When ever you see tags like {{frodo}} or anything else with {{'s, it's basically a way to paste one page into another. In the case of Media Portal, the image is on the page Add-on:MediaPortal PVR Client (wiki), and the tag "{{#lst:Add-on:MediaPortal PVR Client|Settings}}" pastes the settings section into the other page, so that's why you don't see the image tag directly.

Thank you Ned Scott. This was exactly the reply I thought. So what I need to know is what is the format here? Why do these other pages about PVR Add-on have spiralled links? And what is my best answer? To mimic these other pages or keep everything to one page?

cheers

Whatever's easiest. I think we'll end up just merging the add-on pages and the pvr/sub pages to make it easier to edit and such. No real reason to have two different pages, either. In other words, as long as you throw the information up there, it will get organized in the right spot one way or another.

Thanks Ned Scott. I think I will go the way of just putting it all into one page. Being a wiki person I DO like categories and refs to other pages etc BUT I can see that a load of this PVR stuff has had some pretty drastic changes over a short period of time.

Easiest? One page. One Edit? No back-edit Wink

cheers v v much for your help and time

@ fiveisalive!

I do not feel that we are working as a team here! We need to talk. You keep editing this page:

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=PVR/NextPVR

but with no real chat! You gave me a link via a PM to a yet non-created chat page. Can we chat somewhere? Before you change what I have done so that I can understand it better?

Thank you

Hiya Ned Scott,

newbie round here so treading carefully Big Grin

IMHO

The global screenshot explaining the different TV standards throughout the world is most excellent.

and the breakdown into platforms helps to make things much clearer

I would question where the support placement is on the NextPVR page. From my experience with wiki's it is better to place the support bit lower in the page as this helps people to actually try stuff before just panicking and asking questions in support that have already been answered if they bothered to read down....

EPG? Do you guys have a glossary? From my humble experience there are a load of people out there that don't know what such acronym's mean. I always find it better that someone can find the answer to their question within the manual that they are reading rather than have to navigate out of it? Could a definition of EPG be put into PVR FAQ's? Then we could/can link to that from individual pages?

many thanks for your time

Not really, at best it's confusing. I don't know about the rest of the blue countries that are listed as DVB-T, but in most of europe we have DVB-T/T2, DVB-S/S2 and DVB-C.
A simple fix would be to rename the blue to DVB. But I don't know what the idea behind the globe is and if that will really help, if the idea is to help people to buy the correct tuner it's simply wrong information..

For digital signals in most of EU if you have an antenna it's DVB-T, if it's a sattelite dish it's DVB-S and if it's cable provider it's DVB-C.
