[LIVE] Cheap build...but will it work?
#1
Hello,

I have been putting off building my HTPC because I was looking for a very cheap alternative to my original XBOX. Last night I came across the following site: http://goo.gl/Xmthp and decided to try and find all the products on http://www.newegg.ca. I managed to find the products with a price tag of $290 - $15 (MIR) shipping and taxes included. My media is on a central server.

[MOBO+CASE+PSU] http://goo.gl/wstV5 $84.99
[CPU] http://goo.gl/hI6fT
[RAM] http://goo.gl/6339k
[GPU] http://goo.gl/C43x8
[SSD] http://goo.gl/z2CKW

My needs:
1- Small and quiet
2- Appliance feeling (XBMC Live)
3- 720p and 1080p
4- Low power consumption

My questions are:
1- Will this build work?
2- Do all the products integrate well with each other?
3- Are there alternative/better products for the same price?

Thanks in advance for any feedback

i wouldn't use a 2 slot GPU like that,,,
unless you dont need a WiFi card later on
or your sure the card will fit in that case...
if the PCI Express X1 slot is behind the x16 slot,
that ASUS 210 wont work in that case...

an alternative could be GIGABYTE GV-N210OC-512I GeForce 210
as it uses only 1 slot and not 2,,, would be safer....

For SSD, i would get that 16GB version,,, http://ow.ly/1sIWJF
8GB is enough for XBMC live but,
you'd gain immense read speeds...
Sequential Access - Read up to 230MB/s

My only concern with that card is that it is not a low profile card.
I am not sure if it will fit in the case.

I cant comment on this exact model, but i recently bought the Foxconn SFF R30-D4 and the fan/power supply was way too loud for me. I ended up selling it to a friend and built a i3 machine for around $300.
