Whats the best way to compress 1080p video for XMBC playback?
I have recently built my XBMC and am looking for the best way to compress my HD video files.
I have various formats currently -
.mkv
.m2ts
.mov
.iso
I have an iMac which I would complete the compression on so any software reccomenadations would be appriciated.
I don't want to lose any quality from the 1080p files...

all those "formats" you mention (apart from .iso) is just containers.
mkv is the container that works best i'd reckon.

would you recommend converting all of the to .mkv for standardisation?
What MAC software would I use, I currently use handbrake for my iPad?

My Vote is with Spiff .mkv is a good way to go.
Using handbrake gives you many options to choose from such as audio format (5.1,DTS, Stereo etc) and video (scaling, format, etc..)
If I remember correctly XBMC will play an .iso DVD rip out of the box.
Personally my process for movies is RIP DVD (using DVD FAB to folders) then Encode with Handbrake to .mkv.
