Playing video_ts works fine/stable with few quirks(menu plays in slow motion) but totally usable. I'm using the latest May 16th build.

Because it doesn't make any difference at all...
I don't even have menus in any of my DVDs. They just keep buffering all the time...

The goal here really is to make 'generic high quality x264 rips', which is the reason why I referred you to the 'scene rules' on this matter. (since that is their specialty) As long as you adhere to the rules they should play fantastic in XBMC and anything else that supports hi bitrate x264 with an mkv container format.
