HTPC Build Options: AMD E-350
#1
Hi,

I have been reading this forum and others to find out all the ins and outs of a HTPC build. Currently I have a Popcorn A-100 and I wish to move to a HTPC to enable the playing of 1080p MKV's and subtitles. Also I would like to use XBMC.

I have a NAS setup like this http://www.avforums.com/forums/networkin...d-nas.html which services all my storage, SABnzbd, SickBeard & CouchPotato needs on Linux.

From the research I have done it would appear that I can not use a Linux setup with XBMC at the moment to get HD Audio. Unless I use a nightly build and do some hacking myself to make it work using various methods posted in this forum. Obviously the aim is for this to be standard on XBMC 11 in the future.

So if I was to go with the AMD E-350 Mobo / CPU combo, would I be able to switch a linux setup in the future? Is that 'future' likely to be miles away?

regards,

AMD gpu + linux is complete fail. Unless that gets fixed, even if they get HD audio working it will probably just work on Nvidia and possibly intel.
They guys at openelc say they are working on AMD drivers but I am not sure if/when it will be usable.

According to this thread (you will have to dig a little):

people seem to have E350 builds working just fine with linux using vaapi hardware acceleration.

Not true - plenty of success stories on these forums getting E350's working under linux - it's not 'plug and play' just yet, but it can very much work.

E.g.

Assume it will only get better with time.

Yeah, that all tails with the research I have done.

With a lot of hacking and Linux knowledge you could get it running.

Fingers crossed it will be in the future.

Now I'll have to weigh up the cost difference on an i3 with the integrated graphics vs the E350 Fusion.
