Try changing your desktop to one of the other refresh rates load XBMC.

I tried that, set the desktop res to both 50Hz and 24Hz. XBMC then runs at that refresh rate, 24p movies look great...

Its just i dont wanna do that everytime i watch something, plus xbmc feels clunky at 24Hz.

XBMC just wont change automatically, but i dont know why!

I can set the extra refresh rates through catalyst control centre, but if i go to windows display properties, click the settings tab, then advanced, then the monitor tab, the only refresh rate i have is 60Hz... could this be the problem? rather annoying as the tv runs at other refresh rates... how can i add some there?

Just thought I'd mention I'm having the same problem but with an nvidia gt430 win7 and also have it going through a denon. I ripped a bluray disc and i cant get xbmc to not play it in 60hz even though both windows and nvidia are set to 24hz. When I'm in my desktop its at 24 but when I'm in xbmc it goes back to 60. Same bluray on the ps3 does 24hz no problem so I know it's not an issue with my media/tv/receiver.

Update...

I think ive sussed it out!

The problem seemed to be with the ATI driver. (most recent one... in fact ive tried a few)

i installed the driver from the ASUS site, (manufacturer of my graphics card) which is quite old by graphics card driver standards

Installed it, and now windows (not ccc) sees other refresh rates available, and so does XBMC

Now i have a new problem...

In the new list of available resolutions, windows and xbmc now sees a refresh rate of 120Hz as available, and for some reason, this is what xbmc selects when playing 23.976fps material.

My tv will display this as 60Hz, so i'm actually no better off.

This is progress, but i either need to somehow remove the 120hz option from the list, or use the adjustrefreshrate override option in advancedsettings.xml, as mentioned on here:

but i'm using the Dharma 10.1, and i guess i'll need to use one of the nightly build versions to do this, but i have no idea which one, and that may well bring with it more problems!!!

Sorted...

I used an even older graphics card driver, no 120hz refresh this time.

At first test, all seems to be working as it should... requires further testing tho.
