IR Receivers for DirecTV Remote control of XBMC
#1
Hi all,

I've been scouring the forums and everything I find on the topic seems to be very dated and just leads me around in circles. I'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the direction of an IR Receiver and possibly remote (I'd much prefer to use my DirecTV RC64R remote if possible).

I recently received Windows 7 Vista XP Media Center MCE PC Remote Control but I can't get any of the DirecTV codes to play nice, nor eventghost to play nice as it apparently just sends keyclicks. Also, I can't seem to get the infamous "Green Button" to boot XBMC either after trying various reg hacks, etc.

At the end of the day, I'd like my remote to be able to do the following:
  • Launch XBMC
  • Control XBMC
  • Put the HTPC to sleep
  • Wake the HTPC
  • Preferably have some scripted keys I can use for various other tasks

The remote I have, although not my DirecTV one, seems to adequately do #2, 3, 4 on that list but I can't seem to figure out the first or last (I imagine the last is not possible as they're really just keypresses being sent).

Any updated help on the topic would be much appreciated, to clarify, I'm not totally against a new remote by any means, I'd just like to keep them limited, if someone can recommend me a good remote to replace my DirecTV one (that will still handle controlling the DirecTV box) that would be great too.

Thanks for any help on the topic.

Any of the Logitech Harmony remotes would work. I have a Harmony One and it's controlling 6 different devices perfectly.

The remote you have is a VRC-1100. See http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Contr...s#VRC-1100 for details. The VRC-1100 emulates a keyboard so XBMC sees keypresses when you press a button on the remote. I have a VRC-1100 and it should work with XBMC out of the box (with the exception of the i button).

I'm not familiar with the DirecTV remotes. Do you learn the IR signal from the VRC_1100 handset? If so, the VRC-1100 receiver shouldn't be aware the IR is coming from the DirecTV rather than the VRC handset.

By far the best remotes to use are the Microsoft eHome remotes and compatibles. The Wiki article http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews indicates whether the remotes described are MS compatible; all the known MS compatibles are listed first. A lot of universal handsets have an MS emulation mode built in.

See http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Usi...in_Windows for info on using a Microsoft or compatible remote, and see http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Usi..._with_XBMC for general comments on using a remote.

Thanks for all the great info, one quick question, if I were to go with the Harmony One, would something like this (Dell RC6 Receiver) be good?

Yes, or probably yes. It looks like a rebadged Microsoft receiver. I have a Dell remote and the receiver looks like that and is Microsoft compatible.
