In my setup, I have an instance of XBMC installed on a desktop. I went to VIDEOS -> Add source and was able to pick the root folder containing all my movies. They play fine on this computer.

I have another instance of XBMC installed on a laptop. I go into VIDEOS -> Add source -> uPnP Devices -> [my desktop] and I have two choices, "Music Library" and "Video Library." I pick "Video Library" and click OK. The screen goes to "Set content." I pick "Movies" and check "Run automated scan" and "Scan recursively" since I know my movie files are a few folders down.

Now I go back to VIDEOS and there's "Movies" and "Recently added movies." I cannot choose from the file directory but must choose from one of "Actors," "Countries," etc. I pick "Title." I see 3 of the 4 movies. Presumably I don't see the 4th movie because its name did not exactly match its scraped title. I dunno.

Anyway, I then pick "Lord of War" hoping for some Nicolas Cage goodness. Instead I get sometimes nothing, sometimes a message saying it could not be played, and an awesome log file, something like the following:

I don't know what this means or how to fix it, since I didn't develop this program. If anyone can help, that would be awesome. Oh yeah, Blu-rays don't play over the network either, instead I get this awesomeness:

I found another thread that mentioned DVD/BD won't stream over uPnP, so I have to use PMS or some other server that transcodes the media. This makes sense, but I'm not sure what the point is then of having a server since without this it basically just acts as a repository for video files.

Anyway, now I know. And knowing is half the battle.

Share the folder(s) containing your media on the desktop, then on the laptop add the shared folder(s) as a source. This will give better results than trying to use uPnP. XBMC does have a uPnP server built in, but it isn't as fully featured as a uPnP server like TVersity or The Orb.
